My experience of reading a story to children
Whilst on my PP1 placement i was able to read a chapter of a book to the whole class, even though this was a KS2 class, i still found it a very calming and intimate process.
I arranged the children on the carpet on chairs, if i had had the choice i would have liked all the children on the carpet, but as it was a small classroom, i did the best with what i had. I ensured all children were facing towards me and were listening when i started.
Whilst reading i tried to engage eye contact, i found this a difficult aspect as i was also trying to read the book at the same time, but found it useful to ensure all children were concentrating. I tried to speak confidently, with tone and slowly, putting emphasis on the talking and voices needed for the characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and hope to do more of it within KS1 and other classes within my placements and teaching career.
