Big Brother isn't watching you…

For the last few years I've been worrying about the authoritarian tendencies of our government. I've written articles about it, engaged in long discussions about it, tried to keep an eye on everything they're doing, and so forth. But all along, I might have simply missed a crucial point:

Tony Blair may want to turn Britain into an authoritarian state, but his government is too incompetent to do so!

What a revelation!

Unfortunately, this is only a temporary respite. They may be incompetent and unable to spy on their own ass (hint: use a mirror), but that's no reason not to worry about what the next government might do with the legislative framework set up by this one. They might really make it work.

Did you catch Henry Porter's article on ID cards this week? It's a good one.
Also, did you hear about the whole Vanity Fair incident last week? I'll dig out the sources for that one, it's bizarre, and kinda scary!

Ed – Tories supporting ID cards now, a vote for the Liberals perhaps? ;)

  4. Ed, thanks for reminding me, I still haven't done it arrgh! So much other stuff going on right now, but it is important.

Chris, I did, it was a good one. I've been very impressed by all of Henry Porter's articles on the subject actually, he's got a real crusade going.

Governments have never been competent (a competent government truly would be a Golden Age) but their lack of competence has never previously been a hinderance to what they might consider "progress".
