I've only just caught up with the comments about changing freewheels/cassettes/chains (been too busy to look at "Cycling to Warwick" in the last week, I'm afraid). Anyway, just to repeat my previous comment that if anyone needs advice about cycle maintenance, I will try to help out (using experience gained working in a bike shop, running Campus Cycles for a couple of years and teaching cycle maintenance at Adult Education classes). But it would be best to contact me direct rather than waiting for me to respond to a comment on "Cycling to Warwick".

There seems to be some evidence in the comments on the referenced entry that the cleaning and lubrication of a chain can make a significant difference to to the life of it and the cassette, and my experience seems to be that the regime I've made up for myself isn't working as well as it should. So, how should I look after my drive train?

Well I think link says some sensible things. I'd clean the chain whenever it squeeks or shows signs of rust.
