The seminar will examine the claims of the Romantic artists, with particular reference to the English context. Close attention will be paid to seminal essays by Wordsworth and Shelley, and key themes explored. These include: the artist as autonomous genius; the moral power of the imagination; the opposition to industrialism; the critique of popular culture; and hostility towards the public.

The course will begin with an exploration of Schiller's idea of art as an agent of cultural restoration, with particular reference to the Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man. Specific attention will be paid to the two central themes of the treatise – the relationship of art to politics, and of insight to action. Schiller's debt to Rousseau will be acknowledged, and his intellectual legacy examined.

CORK 2005

Writing about web page http://www.cork2005.ie

Hi everybody,

I have an idea and I would like to share it with you. How does it
appeal you going to Cork (Ireland) between 4–6 March 2005 ? Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005 so it would be great if we can organise a study visit in situ as part for example of our 'European Integration' module.

The benefits from this trip are obvious so I won't analyse them
right now. There will be an announcement as well on our lovely bloody blog which you would be able to consult.

I know that there are going to be objections about the dates or the length of the trip but we can discuss all that during this week in order to achieve a final proposal.

Any objections, comments and remarks are welcome, but it will be better to continue the debate on the blog instead of topping up our mailboxes.

Cu later on,

p.s. In the meantime, you can have a look at the following links:
