An update from… Romford!

Well I'm finally farming, not at my farm in Oxford but a place near Romford (2 fields outside of the M25). I started last tuesday, and in my first 6 days managed to clock up a not too shabby 94 hours, including a 20 hour first day stint. Mainly I'm corn carting with a John Deere 6910 and a 14 tonne trailer (with greedy boards on though – I managed an 18.26 tonne load with a total weight of 30 tonnes which I was very satisfied with, although the total lack of braking and inevitiable jack–knifing all over the place can get most exciting at times!). Also had a little go on our CX880 combine, and today also had a go subsoiling on our Caterpillar D8, which for me has to be one of the most fun machines I've ever driven. It's a converted D8 bulldozer with all the unneccessary bits thrown off, so it only weighs 20 tonnes. It runs on 2 steel tracks, has a massive 6 cylinder turbo engine with about 320 horsepower, and has an open–air cab. It's so ridiculously loud on it, but it's absolutely unstoppable – it just doesn't lose traction or get bogged down at all. It's awesome! I was pulling an 11 leg subsoiler and it barely felt like it was being worked at all. We also have a Cat Challenger 75C and a John Deere 8520T, and possibly my most all–time favourite tractor, a John Deere 7810, which I really want to go ploughing with soon, so hopefully that will work out. All in all, life is great down in Essex despite the changeable weather.
