Sugar Puffs crimping Mighty Boosh style
Writing about web page http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eaB7Q-9uwp4
HM Foods, creators of the Sugar Puffs brand of cereal are launching their latest 3.2m publicity campaign fronted by everyones lovable friend, the Honey Monster. However this time the milk tastes sour in many viewers mouth due to what many have commented as “blatant plagiarism”.
The advert in question involves the Honey Monster sitting down with ‘a friend’ and singing a short song before tucking into a bowl of the aforementioned cereal. The problem is the song bears more than a passing resemblance to that of the Mighty Boosh’s “crimping” style.
For those of you not in the know, the term crimping was coined by the duo late in series 3 as a term for representing their distinctive short, random and bizzare raps usually associated with various mimes on topics such as soup and bouncy castles. Essentially they are quite distinctive and one is generally found in most episodes of the Boosh.
Compare and contrast:
Whilst clear to most people that there is a uncanny resemblance of the two, the question is can you legally own a singing style? I am curious as I am not sure what hope this would have in court, could I copyright techno?
I personally think its a fragrant stealing of ideas and if that is the direction they wanted to go in they should have hired Noel and Julian to write one for the advert as opposed to doing a much lesser job. The outcome of this battle will be an interesting one, purely for the copyright issues it shows up.
Hopefully the best outcome is that Sugar Puffs reputation will be tainted and they pull the advert due to all the negative publicity. Teach them right!
