Some Amazing Things About Being a Christian

A lot of people think that being a christian restricts you and makes your life boring. They think God is a kill joy. This isn't true! These are just a few things that I think are great about being a christian:

•You have a place in heaven! (Luke 23:43)
•Your life has purpose –the reason for your life is to glorify God and to tell people about Him and what He has done for them –this is an amazing privilege. (Matt 28:19)
•You are never alone –God is always with you and helps you through everything. (Hebrew 13:5)
•God, the creator of the whole universe is your friend. (colossians 1:16)
•You don’t ever need to be afraid of dying. (John 3:16)
•You can never be separated from God’s Love (Romans 8:35)
•You have God’s Holy Spirit inside you to help you. (John 14:16)
•You can speak to God through prayer. (1 John 5:14&15)
•You know that everything in your life works together for good. (Romans 8:28)

(Please don't think I'm trying to downplay your blog, quite the opposite! I'm just awake at crazy AM and these posts are appearing onto the Recent Entries page)

What are your opinions about how the Bible should be taken? You've used some things here as a specific mention of the "perks" of Christianity, and you seem to be using the Bible as your main reference, to use crude University terms. Yet, the Bible was written by the hand of man under the guidance of God, rather than by God's own hand (Hand?). As such, the Bible is – surely – simply a rhetorical and metaphorical guide on which to learn the teachings of Christianity, as opposed to a history book that chronicles the past. For example, there are passages in the Bible that have no place in Christianity if taken on face value, for example I seem to remember reading a passage where God instructs an army to go out and slaughter an enemy in a brutal fashion.

In the day and age we live in in which the worldwide religions are all too badly looked upon by the media and as such the sheep of the general public, do you not think it's inherently dangerous to live by the Bible as a certain and set in stone guide to life? Taking the teaching of Islam all too literally leads to consequences that are all too visible in the modern world, and with all modern religion basically being a re-teaching of the general deity-Earth story, so to speak, in my opinion it is dangerous to teach the Bible in the same way.

That's all too philosophical for 9am… Not sure what came over me

  2. im only a simple maths student -that was quite a lot of words (and it is early!) I will try and answer but i don't pretend to know all the answers at all. I believe the bible is the inspired word of God -he revealed to the people who wrote it what he wanted them to write, and I believe it is all relevant today.
I do believe it is dangerous to take verses out of the context they were written in, but I do believe in following what the bible says. I don't think this is dangerous because the bible isn't teaching for people to go out and slaughter people etc. (like in deuteronomy 7 -i think thats the bit you mean). The bible teaches that God offers people mercy for a set time (for people alive now that is the amount of time which we are alive on earth for) but because he is God, he can decide when the time for mercy is over -he decided that in this passage and just used the israelites as his tool for delivering his punishment.
I hope that kind of makes sense and answers your question a little bit??

It wasn't so much a question as thinking out loud, I guess, but everyone loves a bit of discussion :)

  4. Yesterday I got a Christian housemate to admit that he doesn't believe in Evolution!! Awesome :D :D

It was an interesting discussion actually. I'm just glad – given how seriously some Christians seem to take the Bible – that it doesn't tell people to do anything bad like going round killing people. That would be really scary! _

Good grief. Yeah imagine what could happen if there were such a book! That would be really scary!
