How to establish just how unfit you are …

… in two easy steps.

  1. Buy a new bike after not having owned one for 14 years
  2. Ride it into work

I wouldn't mind but I only live in Earlsdon! And I run around like a lunatic at work (although that's fuelled largely by diet coke, so probably doesn't count!)

    If it's any consolation, it'll get easier in about a week or so, when your brain gets the hang of cycling, and then again in about 3 weeks when your legs catch up. Have you managed to find a Prada hi-visibility jacket yet? ;-)

    ..or try riding up a big hill in the middle of nowhere (like the Cotswolds) with Chris M. Then you'll REALLY know how unfit you are.

    Steve: I just need to look at Chris to know how unfit I am. If I tried riding up a big hill in the middle of nowhere with him then in the unlikely event I made it up without falling off mid coronary, then I suspect the trip down would finish me off. Besides which, I don't like mud. At least not when it's all wet and you sink into it. Urgh.

    I was just like this three years ago, when I bought my first bike in about 20 years. Getting back home the first day (less that two mile journey) I felt like I needed 100% Oxygen for a while. I does get better very quickly.

    My first "non-flat" target was cycling up Gibbet Hill and not requiring a 30 minute rest before coming back down again. Didn't take too long to manage that.

    Before long it'll be like you had never taken a break…

    Don't mess around with all this getting healthy stuff…

    By the time your body starts to fail you e-lab will have developed suitable bionic technologies to get you leaping from dodgy server to errant switch faster than a speeding bullet.

  10. It's a Specialized Enduro 2004 (not sure if the link will work as their site seems to use all sorts of session state in URL, gack). Because obviously I need a FSR bike for that 15 minute trip into work! ;-)

    Here's a link that's more likely to work

    If you plan to take it off-road (and you bloody well should :-) ) it's a good idea to buy the little mudguard that fits over the rear shock. If you don't, you'll find yourself replacing shock bushings (more accurately, you'll find the bike shop replacing them) with depressing frequency.
