Unionism = Cobblers

Mr [Brendan] Barber told the rally: "No longer should British workers like the Peugeot workers in Coventry find that they are the cheapest and easiest in Europe to get rid of when the going gets tough – and we send them a message of solidarity today." He added: "We need stronger unions allowed by law to give workers a powerful voice at work, supporting each other in solidarity."

Surely workers in Coventry will be laid off if they are the least productive, most expensive to train, hire and employ in Europe? What exactly are Unions going to do to stop this? Stronger Unions are far more likely to end in layoffs, as necessary restructuring measures that would have turned Ryton into a Sunderland or Swindon would have been opposed.

Unless Unions regain some sense of reality, they'll become even more irrelevant than they appear today, and do even more damage to their own members.
