Radio 1's appalling weekend schedule

One down, two (Vernon Kay and Sara Cox) to go…

BBC Radio 1 presenter DJ Spoony is to leave the station after six years to explore other offers. The DJ, who currently hosts the Radio 1 weekend breakfast show, will leave the station in September – at the same time as the station has a schedule overhaul.

    Oh no…Vernon is great!

    28 Jul 2006, 12:04

  2. Vernons not there on weekends either. He's presenting T4! Never ever enter a Radio 1 competition..its bound to be pre–recorded.

    28 Jul 2006, 13:00

  3. True.

    28 Jul 2006, 13:10

I think you will find T4 is recorded on a thursday and the radio1 show is live

    28 Jul 2006, 13:19

  5. Quite a few of his Radio 1 shows aren't live, although I think you maybe right in saying T4 is usually recorded.

If it means more of Vern then thats fine by me!

    28 Jul 2006, 16:34

  7. He's a moron who thinks he is far funnier than he actually is. And an awful, incompetent DJ to boot.

    28 Jul 2006, 16:55

  8. Controversial statement alert – I like Sara Cox but that could be north–western affinity.

    28 Jul 2006, 22:07

  9. I know lots of people hate the sound of Sara Cox, I've even heard rumours of people writing in to complain that her breakfast show was ruining their morning, but I like it! What's wrong with a good honest Northern accent? In fact probably my least favourite accent is London, I can't really fault any other British accent.

    29 Jul 2006, 02:01

  10. I gave up with Radio 1 a long time ago – ever since Mark and Lard left the whole thing's been a complete pile of crap, full of egotistical, unfunny fools like Chris Moyles and Sara Cox (despite the Northern accent – that I like). Also Radio 1 "Newsbeat" is a total embarassment. It's obviously cool to intermittently drop your 't's and talk in a patronising manner even if it does make you sound totally unprofessional.

Give me Radio 2 any day (except Steve Wright.)

    29 Jul 2006, 02:10

  11. Spoony and Cox might not be the greatest DJ's, but Vernon Kay is a brilliant weekend DJ. His lie–in on a Sunday morning is the two hours of radio I most look forward to every week. I used to hate Mark & Lard with a passion, I just didn't find them funny or interesting to listen to. Interesting comment about the accents – that annoys me a bit too. There seems to be something of a reversal in tradition with broadcasters going on at R1, almost all presenters on there are northern or from other UK countries. Still, at least you can tune into Radio 4 every now and then to hear people speak English properly!

    29 Jul 2006, 08:10

  12. It's not the accents though – it's just the awful sense of humour and the egos of the three.

Vernon Kay NEVER plays a track in full. He'll say "This track's brilliant" before playing precisely 60 seconds of it and then talking all over it again. JUST SHUT THE HELL UP!

Sara Cox is the least annoying of the three, but her tendency to talk in 'baby speak' gets right on my nerves.

I don't mind Moyles talking over records because he often has something funny to say. At the weekend you just wonder why the DJ is there, because they seem to know nothing about the music they're playing and don't know how to DJ either.

    29 Jul 2006, 09:07

  13. Sigh

I miss Mark and Lard. I met Mark once in a pub at a folk festival with his band The Family Mahone, and he was great.

    29 Jul 2006, 10:31

  14. Yay PetHate time!
Sara Cox used to, and still does, piss me right off. Dumbarse that she is. I find it amusing when I'm trawling the airwaves now that after her 'peak' at breakfast time with loads of listeners and crew around her, she's no aaaalll alone in the studio. (I think).
NewsBeat – Whenever I've had the misfortune to hear it I feel like I'm a 15 year old who's about to sit a media studies exam (I actually did media GCSE though. Hmm.) So patronising and simplified. Basically The Sun read aloud.
    Mark&Lard – Bestest.
Spoony – Bloody awful radio presenter. Him and the DreeeemTeeeiiimmm or whatever they called themselves.

And the IQ Radio1 is aimed at can be calculated from the quizes Spoony used to host, I feel.

UpperMiddleWorkingClass rant over. Back to Radio 1. And Steve Wright is damn nifty, Mr Keates.

    29 Jul 2006, 11:11

  15. Right, here's the correct opinions :)

    Spoony – rubbish

Sara Cox – I would rather tear my ears off than listen to her.

Vernon Kay – great. I like his shows because of the slightly larger range of songs he plays, and also the ever–so–slightly–turned–up–nose way he reads out people's texts about their hen and stag nights.

Mark and Lard – pleased when they went.

Moyles – don't like the smug way he keeps referring to himself as the 'saviour', and about how many people listen to him in the morning. I don't have the figures but I'm sure at least twice as many listen to Wogan on Radio 2 every morning.

My favourite's are Colin and Edith, for what its worth.

    29 Jul 2006, 12:00

  16. trixie

Actually like someone says above it's T4 that is recorded, and Vernon isn't prerecordered very much. If he can't make it they usually get Chappers and Dave in rather than prerecord

    29 Jul 2006, 17:17

  17. Sara Cox constantly sounds like she either has a really bad cold, or is chewing a boiled sweet. What would be nice is if the djs didn't talk at all and just played music constantly.

    30 Jul 2006, 14:41

  18. …or had better music taste.

    30 Jul 2006, 20:02

  19. Or weren't given a crappy playlist

    30 Jul 2006, 23:37

  20. They’ve just announced Spoony’s replacment…none other than Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates…

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2006/07_july/30/weekend.shtml

The couple that brought down Top of the Pops…who knows what they could do to Radio 1!

    01 Aug 2006, 10:27

  21. Has anyone seen where Spooney’s going? I couldn’t believe it myself, but after his ‘successful’ stint as a host on Radio 5’s 6-0-6 he has gone to be a full time sports presenter for the station!

Not strictly on topic, but I think its disgraceful that the BBC have axed Top of the Pops without commissioning an alternative show. Okay so the TOTP was always a bit dodgy, but its a harmless enough concept that could easily be done well. The BBC is a public service broadcaster, it has a responsibility to provide a variety of schedulling.

    01 Aug 2006, 12:24

  22. I could fill a very long blog entry with how they buggered up Top of the Pops and failed to even attempt to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Idiots. Here’s my eight point plan:

    1) Move TOTP to Saturday nights
    2) Make everyone play live, even if the show itself isn’t
    3) Don’t try and copy the chart. No-one buys singles any more.
    4) Choose acts based on how good they are live – not how popular they are that week
    5) Make the studio feel less like a burnt out town hall and more like a gig venue
    6) Let bands come on and play more than one song, maybe one of them a cover (like that Dermot O’Leary show that used to be on BBC Three)
    7) Get some decent presenters – probably off Radio 1 – it’ll at least mean better cross-promotion
    8) This is an important one… NEVER EVER LET ANDI PETERS NEAR THE SHOW AGAIN

Meanwhile, Spoony’s been awful when I heard him on 5Live – they’d be better off getting Comedy Dave to host 6-0-6. Basically, just let him be a club DJ again. He’s crap on radio.

    01 Aug 2006, 21:13

  23. The only thing with those ideas Chris is, good as they are, they sound perilously like Later… With Jools.

    01 Aug 2006, 23:03

  24. So long as the show isn’t presented by a smug arse, I don’t think that’d be a problem!

    02 Aug 2006, 12:26

  25. Firstly, Mark and Lard are the two most humourless people on the history of the planet and it is disgraceful that they are allowed/ paid to inflict their “comedy” upon the general public.
Secondly, Fearne and Reggie did not kill totp the producers did. I personally dodn’t really like Reggie that much but due to powers beyond my control (stupid job) I’ve been having to get up at stupid early hours of the morning and as such have been hearing some of Reggie who’s filling in for JK and Joel, and is suprisingly good. I think spoony is slightly overrated, and no longer reaches the demographic he used to, this is a club dj who plays golf, what?
Sara cox can be slightly irritating, and yet is okay, but vernon kay is actually at times moderately funny.

    03 Aug 2006, 19:16

  26. Surprised by the level of anti-M&L opinion on here. They were by far the best thing on Radio 1 – it’s never been the same since. Lamacq and the Zipper are decent, Chris Moyles can be alright, as are Colin & Edith, though I’m sure they used to be funnier. The rest are shite.

    05 Aug 2006, 15:05

  27. Chris: “I don’t mind Moyles talking over records because he often has something funny to say”

Huh? What? Where? I think I must have missed that one time cos I listen to his show every morning (I await the joyous occasions when he goes on holiday – quite regularly – and Scott Mills takes over, who actually IS a legend, singing telegrams from Orson was radio gold :D )

I need to get a DAB car radio, but right now the alternative to Moyles is ‘Chris and Sally the morning crew’ (cutting my own ears off is preferable) or silence…

I’ll be interested to hear Fern and whatsit at the weekend, it’s bound to be an improvement! Colin and Edith won’t be together much longer – their last ever show together is at the weekend (not such a bad thing, I thought they were funny once but now they just irritate me). My guilty pleasure is Zane Lowe’s show, and Bobby Friction and Nihal…

Jo Whiley. She just gets better and plays superb music.. She’s the

I miss Spoony, Coxy is OK but can be a bit annoying Vernon is gorgous but that’s not much us on the radio. I like Chris Moyles but he is a bit a kiss ass when guests are on but Scott Mills is by far the funniest. Last of all why oh why did they move Colin Murray to evenings I MISS HIM

I appreciate everyone is entitled to their own opinions about music, radio stations and DJ’s, but amongst 16-25 year olds (which I understand Radio1 is aimed at) it is by far and away the most popular radio station to listen to, at pretty much any time of the day. Capital FM used to be top dog amongst today’s youth, but due to poor playlists and second-rate radio presenters (ie Breakfast show hosts who are brilliant on telly but can’t transfer to radio) it has gone down the pan – leaving the once rubbish and out-of-touch Radio1 to be King. Presenters such as Jo Whiley, Zane Lowe etc have a big knowledge of what’s new and the next big thing, ie Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T and Sway etc. but also play todays cheesy pop tracks as well to keep everyone entertained.
I listen to Radio1 nearly all day every day, and i’m pretty fussy, but near every DJ manages to make it entertaining and play good music. I think maybe if you don’t like a particular DJ, maybe swich stations for those three hours or listen to a CD – or maybe apply like one of the thousands of people for work experience and get yourself on prime-time radio?

I’ve been listening to Radio 1 for a number of years and particualrly enjoy my morning drive with Chris Moyles, and my Drive home with Scott Mills. The weekend I avoid Radio 1 until the Chart show with JK and Joel. I have absolutely nothing against the northern accent and quite like it, its the standard of babbling that Sarah cox subjects me to that really gets to me. I feel like im earwigging in on a mothers meeting, being told stories of Lola. Wouldn’t mind hearing a few – but most links seem to involve her. Before that it was endless stories about her dogs… there are other things to talk about! Vernon Kay is alright – i can suffer him, and quite enjoy the music selection.. but still there are other things to listen to that i enjoy alot more.

I found this blog by accident. I listen everyday all day to radio 1. I get annoyed if i wake up late and miss any of Chris moyles. The radio station is clearly the best. Radio 2 will bore you to death. Capital has been utter sh*e ever since Chris Tarrant left. Kiss only play the same ten songs all day everyday. Also spoony is crap club DJ aswell he did New Years at liquid in windsor a year ago and played 1 track 4 times that night. All the others are good though. I preferred Colin and Edith together but collin’s new show is good if your driving home late at night. And I agree with the majority Mark and Lard were absolute s*t.

Colin and Edith provide great entertainment.

i tend not to listen to radio 1 so much as they seem pre-occupied with abnds liek Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight etc.. bands which piss alot of people off.

  35. Dom Young

This is pathetic. Why do you need to have a rant about a radio station you don’t like? Here’s an idea for you, switch to a different radio station. Personally I think Radio1 is great and most of the DJ’s are really funny and interesting. Vernon Kay is genious with great morning shows, I agree Sarah Cox can get on your nerves and she doesn’t seem to talk much sense but Radio1 still win the most awards at Radio Awards Ceremonies. So many people enoy Radio1 that talking about this is a waste of time and Radio1 are going to continue getting on your nerves and I really hope they do!

    04 Mar 2007, 19:37

  36. Ah I do miss these numpty comments… Firstly Dom, this entry is nearly nine months old. Secondly, I think you’ll find I do like Radio 1. I don’t like their weekend schedule. Did you actually read the page before commenting? Thirdly, which “Radio Awards Ceremonies” do you read about? I can’t think of one where Radio 1 win most of the awards. Unless they have some internal Christmas party awards thing, where they’re pretty much a dead cert in every category.

So many people enoy Radio1 that talking about this is a waste of time

    You really are a numb-nuts, aren’t you?

oh sweet lord of all that is good a pure, get Sara Cox off the radio, out of my ears or better still, off the face of the planet! She is currently covering Edith Bowman, who I also would take delight in watching getting hit by a bus but to a lesser extent, and she is honestly making my ears sick! Her attempts to go off on tangents about certain subjects then just stop, make a disgusting noise with her mouth that sounds like she’s sucking saliyva escaping from her mouth back into her gob, or her attempts at ‘funny’ stories or anicdotes which again are cut short by her either realising It’s a yawn creating pile of piss she’s saying or someone in the studio is telling her she’s just lost half their listeners during her ramblings!! Oh and ofcourse a quick suck up of her own saliyva follows this up!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

    08 May 2007, 14:07

  38. KronA

I think the Chris Moyles show is totally overrated. I think Sara Cox has actually toned down her accent, or did I imagine that? I reckon Radio 1 should just play a good mix of contemporary and classic pop music with some amusing comments from the DJs, no need for cringe worthy ‘reality’ radio and Newsbeat is appalling, like playing some sad music in the background somehow adds something to the story and I agree that it’s totally patronising.

Radio 1 ratings should be able to beat Radio 2 ratings, especially in the mornings and evenings! It could be like some of the better local commercial radio stations but without the annoying adverts! Stop the DJs talking so much, they just love the sound of their voice!

    10 May 2007, 18:57

  39. KronA

I forgot to mention that Colin and Edith seem to be the least ego driven DJs on Radio 1 though I’m not sure it’s actually entertainment. Vernon Kay seems pretty down to earth and generally plays a good mix of old and new music.

    10 May 2007, 19:01

  40. The best show on radio at the moment, or even in the past couple of years, is Vernon’s lie-in on a sunday morning. It almost makes up for the rest of the crap they broadcast. Almost.

Also, taking Holly’s point, who needs TOTP when you have Later…

    You’re a bit of a self-rightous, arrogant little prick aren’t you?
