How dare Michael Grade offend the proletariat journalists like John Simpson?

John SimpsonJohn Simpson has criticised Michael Grade’s defection to ITV, saying he saw the BBC as “just another organisation” rather than as a principle or ideal:

We tend to be freer and more creative than other outfits, but that’s not why we endure the low pay and the infuriating bureaucracy and the sometimes ludicrously difficult conditions…

Now hold the phone a second…

that’s not why we endure the low pay…

Er… how much is John Simpson paid and could it possibly be described as “low”?

Considering the number of times he’s been shot at, or nearly blown up by the Americans, it probably could. I’m pretty sure it’s a lot less than Grade will get at ITV.

It could definitely be described as lower than Sky News would pay.

  3. It’s probably not nearly as much as you’re thinking Chris. And I think his wage is probably publically available somewhere.

But a lot of journalists feel that people who shift from the BBC to ITV/Elsewhere for a bigger paypacket are selling out a bit. I remember my dad commenting on Des Lynham’s shift to ITV and saying “that’s the first step”. Sure enough Des abandons dignity for money, appearing naked in a hot-tub in some random TV Advert.
