Concert for Diana… what a shambles!
I didn’t intend to watch today’s Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, but my Mum and sister had it on, so I ended up catching bits of it.
Eventually it became unmissable.
Technically, this was the biggest shambles I think I’ve ever seen on British television. Constant sound dips (played out on various radio stations as well), massive delays, embarrassing performances from the likes of P Diddy, and a completely rubbish climax.
Many of the faults seemed to be the BBC’s fault – especially the sound dips. Claudia Winkleman and Jamie Theakston seemed to be on a different planet to the rest of the production: they’d simultaneously announce different bands were about to play, and sometimes both got it wrong.
Let’s hope they get it right for next week’s Live Earth, also at Wembley, or their reputation for live events will be shot to pieces.

Actually, I didn’t think it was that bad. Yes, they dipped the sound out when they thought it was just gonna be applause. But the acts were great (P. Diddy was just amusing if slightly cringeworthy) and there were some fantastic shots of Prince harry being too embarrased to join in dancing with his older brother.

Just doing a search for Diana gig and BBC sound, and came across your Blog.
Speaking as an average live sound engineer, it was the worst production management of sound I`ve ever heard on TV!
First thoughts:- they had a big problem with the technical / stage management communication between main stage and the studio / backstage areas involving which radio mics they were using. You would be excused the first couple of times, but to let that continue through the show!! PS never run a Vt at the end of a show after you have said good bye, funnily enough you find the audience goes home ! A novice production manager mistake! One you don`t repeat! Keeping audience mics up until you go to Vt avoids 5 secs of dull silence. But i guess someone in charge must have liked it? Also, less acts more songs, makes for a better atmosphere, again i guess more acts was the brief! Show was a v.good thing to do though; It reminded us that the Lady really cared
