Britain has Bird Flu… The best news I've heard in weeks

2,600 turkeys in Suffolk have died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu. This sounds bad. Humans have been known to die from this strain. Adam is scared witless by the thought of bird flu.

But the news of this massive outbreak, the first proper case in Britain, should be seen as a good-news story.

Why?

Because they were to be used in Bernard Matthews products.

Not only will it harm their immediate business (159,000 turkeys will have to be killed) but it will hopefully harm the entire basis of their food production business.

Factory-farmed birds make the fur trade and animal testing look like a picnic. So while this news will hopefully put people off factory-farmed chicken and turkey, it’ll also make people look towards free-range and maybe organic food, which isn’t just better for us, but better for the birds too.

Incidentally, it seems to be a good time to be a journalist in Suffolk. The biggest news stories of the past six months have both come from the same county.

Say what? I’ll have you know that was a long time ago! I’ve been watching the news this morning with the same sense of amusement, especially at News 24’s rather lame coverage.

  4. As long as it doesn’t spread north of the border I don’t care. If it does, then I’ll start to panic. Not because I’m scared of the disease, but they’ll probably shut down the roads in panic, and I won’t be able to go anywhere.

You silly man 100s of kobs are going to be on the brink, what about all those families who depend on this murderous trade. Have you got no mercy? Actually I tyhink we don’t. People should seek different trading opportunities and retrain. Mass animal keeping for slaughter or eggs is an amplifier for diseases like BSE, lie Mad Cow Diseases and like BIRD FLU. Stop teh production line and you will resduce the spread of diseases. I have been vegan for three years and vehetarian for 20 and know more about food than ever now as well as enjoy a cery good health!

That’s a great idea Danie…that way we won’t get bird flu, we’ll just starve to death.

Go to the Waveney District Council website and have a look at the land proposed for 3,500 houses in Holton. All around the Bernard Matthews factory. He also owns all the old aerodrome on which the house proposal is based. It might be in BM’s interest to close the place and sell up for building.

  8. The locals wouldn’t like that; BM is massively important to the local economy.
