Bowdy’s Guide To Webcomics!

As I’ve been on Drunk Duck for ages now, I thought I’d take a moment to share with you a couple of my favourite titles. A long standing one of which is *Rainbow Carousel”.

Created by an artist called Wyldflowa, it has both an individual style and some of the most endearing characters I’ve ever seen! The main story is about a boy called Bubblegum who has just been moved to a new area by his mum after their divorce. First of all we see him arriving at a new school where the most popular girl there immediatly takes a shine to him. Shame he doesn’t shine the same way…

The current arc is involved with him going on a date with a black elf he met in the park who works at the carnaval where the fabled Rainbow Carousel is. What it is and what will happen on it I don’t know!

One of my favourite things about this comic is how down-to-earth it is while being based in a fantasy version of reality; the authors own candidness about her own life probably has a lot to do with it, but the scene where when Bubblegum’s mum wants him to go on the date and gives him condoms to take with him just in case is wicked. It’s just as embarassing as most English kids would find it and yet that highlights one of the things that’s so wrong with society!

Plus all the guys are soooo pretty!!!

The second is also a predominantly homosexual piece, called Lama Glama. I only started with this a few days ago, but it’s amused me so very much that I think everyone should get in on the fun! Fans of Boy meets Boy who can appreciate a little more corsenessin their bishie’s will love it!

The comic itself has just started out;three brothers and their mum from Mexico have moved to Canada, taking Jaoquin’s best friend Brandon with them. The youngest brother is (to those who know him at all, i.e. not his parents or older bro!) out-and-out gay, and a bit of a ho, bless him. Joaquin is currently coming to terms withthe fact he at least has gay tendencies, but as he hates everyone except Brandon and his brother, we can’t be sure if he’s totally swinging the other way or if he’s gonna stick in the middle. Well, it amuses me. This comic hasn’t really gotten to the heart-felt bits yet, but the characters are immediately likeable, the author’s sense of humour is great, and I love it for the amusing asides and backgrounds too!

He’s also created a great spin-off section, “Loins of Justice” where he puts character profiles and pages on which his slightly perverse imagination has run wild…the great thing is it carries off the tongue-in-cheek vibe perfectly, and had me in stitches. Especialy seeing Jaoquin dresses up as various Disney females…so..funny!!!

Anyway, these are how I reccommend you spend your days. I have to go to the bank and pack some more!

The Past Four Years

Are currently spread out around me as I try to figure out what’s actually useful and what’s not…

So here’s a little pause for thought, as it were, while I decide which folder to attack next…

I think the saddest thing I’ve found so far is the tattoo I designed for a friend of mine who I haven’t seen for over a year now. Seems it’s harder and harder to meet up with people these days. I won’t tell you how many messages I sent out yesterday, but only the lovely Miss Hayley Belle has replied and forthwith taken it upon herself to alert the great and good of Cowplain (or at least those weirdos we went to college with!).

Part of me’s wandering if I should use facebook more to root them out, but a certain group aren’t on there, and although one of them has kept in vague contact over the last few months, seems hes out of credit. Or something.

So, I made the actualy decision today that, housemates willing “Bowdy’s BBQ 2007” will be held at our new abode in the Midlands. Yes, we have a new abode, in Earlsdon. It’s very nice, thank you, and we’ll be moving in mid-August.

This is of course, no offense to any of the old pose, and I’m hoping a number of them will be able to make it up to see where these past four years have been spent. But it does mean that I’ll be a tad more central and hopefully a fair few will be able to make it from the many groups of friends I have created over these years.

It’s funny how those groups change, how emotions shift; some of my friends appear to be growing up very quickly, some appear to have regressed, some have been much better to me than I probably deserve, and some I’ve tried to the point where I’m giving up. Then, I suppose that’s where we start making all those little differentiations, isn’t it? Friend, aquaintance, something in between.

Anyway, now I’m just stream-of-conciousing.There’ll be an arts upload tomorrow, including the “Happy Second Birthday” image for MIL, which, I note also passed without anyone else noticing, even though it was part of my MSN name!! Ah well, I’m proud.

I think some of this is overlap/throwback from the events of the weekend; we went to Maelstrom, which was ace, even though my character ended up upset for about 50% of it, and the two people she could possibley have discussed it with rationally weren’t there/available! Poor little Sha…

Update! (at last?!)

Yo, Blogfans, long time no see!

Well, the end of term was hectic as you like! Tried to do everything and see everyone and as such the arts got a bit neglected to say the least!

BUT all that will soon change! I have planned Chapter 10 (again!!) and am working on the cover, I still know I have some late commissions to do and will be starting “Her Secret World” shortly. Although the origonal artbook got lost in the move, my vanity had me put three character designs up on deviantArt, so they are safe! Hurrah!

The downside is my scanner is under Rach’s bed, so it’ll depend how well the designs go as to whether I plug it in now or wait till I get home in a week and a half.

Also, the comic will soon be moving perminantly to Drunk Duck.This will make life better for everyone as the archive is actually usable and the layout is better, although not too personalised yet! There will still be some previews and bonuses on here for you guys, you who have been with me for so long…sob

OK, not getting mushy-Graduation will have enough mush for all!

MAEL–FROTH!!

So, this weekend saw the senior section (i.e. the ones with no more exams!) of Warwick LARPS attend Maelstrom, a Live Action event which occurs four time a year at various sites around the country.

This was mine and Casp’s second event and everyone else’s (Laura, Dan, BJ and Izzy’s) first, I don’t know how many times Tori and Sacha have been, but I’m jealous! Anyway…

I won’t worry you too much with plot, cos to be honest there’s far too much and you really have to be there to understand the sheer awesomeness of 800 LARP-ers in about 10 different races and variations thereon, three in-character fields and one man walking round in a 15 foot dragon costume!!

Add to that Messangers from the Gods materialising in your gazebo, battles raging outside the door and everyone having about three alterior motives never mind the ones they actually display to those around them and you have an incredible weekend!

The other ace bit is I have no responsibility in the system, and even in this group! I just ditz around learning Sourcery. It’s great.

Six weeks til the next one…

Hey guys, a big thanks to Helen, Holly and Casper and Aisa and George on Facebook for their help-I did use some of it in the exam, it was genuinely useful! (Then again I almost quoted ROFLcats in my exam…)

It went well, nothing unexpected, and the most important thing is IT WAS THE LAST ONE!!! I’m free, free at last!

And shattered!

So, Monday will see…actually, I don’t know what Monday will see, probably a froth about Maelstrom, which is where I’m headed for the weekend. Then I’ll be starteing my “back to basics” training, although I will be sketching the boys for “Her Secret World” at various intervals over the weekend…when they’re not in make-up…

Blogs, culture and controversy…

Hey, Blogfans!

Remember those heady days not so long ago when we first stepped into the blogosphere and blogged every little detail of our Warwick (and not so Warwick) lives? The days when Sam Hates was just germinating, and the likes of Dan Lawrence and Holly Cruise just finding their satirical feet?

Well, it has been a good 2 years and more now for some of us, and others use Live Journal or various other programmes, and as I’m sitting my Culture and Controvery exam on Thursday which contains a question related to modern technologies and language (and possibly the learning thereof), what are peoples views on this little section of our vast, hypermedia-rife world?

I’d greatly appreciate responses from anyone who reads/writes/hates blogs and online journals;

What are they good for?

What are they not so good for?

Should they be encouraged or not?

Do you think there’s scope for them as learning tools for students or is PDP just another word for “Ranting about my own miserable existance”?

You won’t be quoted directly, I’m just curious, and if you don’t want your opinion shown here, you can always email me via the address in the Life of Bowdy section.

Exams; The Block

Thanks for the support Casper! But it’s not just me, most of the English Specialists had to get through it, and the Scientists have their last three yesterday,today,tomorrow (including Carrie) so well done/keep it up to everyone! We’re doing so well!

So, Curriculum Maths was…interesting…Section B had changed a bit from previous years, but we were prepared and I think it went alright. Pedagogy I’m also quite confident about, although the EAL question was tricky as I didn’t think English Co-ordinators had as high a responsibility for integration as the EAL Co-ordinators do, but I got down the info I’d learned-felt quite hazy afterwards (it was the first 3 hour one) but Carrie made me a coffee and we soldiered on-she’s been a star because she revises in the kitchen a lot and although I don’t really have a revision-buddy for my subject, just sitting out with her really helped me get down to some good work, so big hugs and thanks to her!

On Wednesday, us English-ers were chatting and figured that Thursday, having done so much we’d feel like we’d finished, and would wander off with the elation which would have to be tempered down in order to work on the Language (or the alternative nineteenth century paper) for late next week.

However, the questions were all so horrible that we all came out downcast and unsure how to proceed. Personally I did manage to answer them, but they weren’t really discussing the book in relation to it’s genre, but one was character based and the other asked if Atwood’s dystopic predictions (bearing in mind The Handmaid’s Tale is set now-ish) are right! my back-up book was asking whether it had anything to teach third generation feminist novels or if it was obsolete! So much for a back-up…

After the initial shock, the Atwood question was quite revelatory; at the moment the predictions for women are (thankfully) inaccurate but there are some parallels with motherhood (as I was explaining to Matt in the pub; sorry dude, you did ask!) also, it could possibly happen, what with money being basically electronic and it being predominantly men in power. So, come on girls, get into politics, or your sex is doomed!

So yeah, with a bit of perspective, I (hopefully) didn’t do too badly, it just looked and felt shocking at the time!

But, on the plus side, one more to go, and Jo and Jubes are visiting this weekend, so much fun is to be had!
