Catching up
OK, as I have been to 2 gigs this week I thought I ought to catch up a bit and review them, even though other things sorta took over!
Sunday night; Sharon Shannon, The Eliza Carthy Band, and support.
I say and support because I can't remember the name of the Gaelic (probably spelt wrong) trio that opened, although they were very good. It was interesting to hear a set sung completely in the Celtish tongue.
The Eliza Carthy Band are wicked, playing mostly traditional songs tonight, with three fiddles (on occassion), sometimes guitar, a squeeze box of some variety and a tuba for bass! They were a lot of fun, bouncing around the stage, really loving what they were doing. Eliza's voice is marvellous, she retains her accent while singing which I love, and today she had blue hair! Check 'em out if you get chance, well worth it!
Sharon Shannon and co. I wasn't so taken with, as they played just tunes for over an hour which would be great if we were in a sunny field somewhere, not sat in the Farnham hall! They were good, you know, skilled musicians and everything, but it all got a bit samey towards the end.
Tuesday night; Arlen in the RMA, Portsmouth
The great thing with Arlen is you can never be quite sure what you're going to get. They've been playing the same songs pretty much, with some swapped in and out for the past year or so purely because they are too far apart to work on new stuff half the time, and some of the songs they started with three years ago are such firm favourites and so good there's no reason not to play them, and quite frankly if I didn't hear "Lonesome Angel" and "Tom Brown" at some point I am heartily disappointed!
Disappoint is something this band don't do often though. The songs change slightly each time, with a new chord here or new fiddle part there, and in the case of tuesdays more electric guitar solos from Chris, which were excellent! It's amazing to see how the musicians develop as well. Russ' drumming keeps getting better (being at the BIM probably helps!) Lucy's voice will always be fabulous but somehow she keeps improving it, and her guitar skills make me sick with jealousy, one year, possibly one and a half of tuition, she's a natural musician, that's all there is to it. They've started working some of her songs into the set now, so I'm looking forward to hearing more of them. That does mean that now there are three song writers in the band (David, Chris and Lucy) and Simon writing tunes, so even though some of their stuff is traditional, I don't think they can really be faulted on origonality!
I ought to stop this, because I could go on forever. Just check out the website and if you're near Petersfield tonight there are still a few tickets left for the Traders. I'd love to go but have no way of getting there without going with them and missing tea here…again…which I'm trying to make up for after last night's incident!
Keep music live! xxx
This place is confusing
Today's bedtime will be a bit before 7am, but I thought I'd give you a bonus entry of a song. Enjoy!
hold me
Cos that's all you can do right now.
This place is confusing
And I don't don't know if I'llmake it out
It's not a person I'm missing
I'm just a person with a piece gone.
It's not the touch of a hand
It's not even a smile.
It's not the shirt he was wearing,
You can't pin it down to style.
It was caring so much
I'd do anything, and I did.
I haven't cared so much for so long,
Maybe that's why they question me.
All the things that I love,
Seemed to pale ____ly
I try to pick myself up
But knowing I have to drags me straight back down.
I know you've been through the same thing,
I just hope you can understand.
I need to be needed,
And wanted, if you can.
So, hold me,
Cos that's all you can do right now.
I know I'm not easy,
But I'll try to be easy somehow.
There's a difference between what you say
And what you convey.
I need a little help actually-what's the word for when things have a relationship, so when one goes down so does the other? answers in a comment box please...

Everything's fine!
Well, let me take you through the evening that was;
I turned up in the company of Kimmy to find the band all sat together rolling and drinking, Lucy came over and hugged me and I said hi to everyone though Simon seemed intent on not seeing me for a bit. Then I sat down and removed my coat and he said "hi", so I decided to just go for it and I went and sat by him and asked how everything is and was, and we talked pretty freely, although I was nervous as hell, and told him honestly about the past two months, and he told me that he's now living in halls (!) and he's back in love with his course and if he does well on his exams he's going to stay on for the duration! I'm pleased things are going well for him.
It took me a while to figure out why I was so on edge and mixed up. For one, we were sat right near the stage and I wasn't sure where to look, because obviously I couldn't watch him any more, but that's what I always did, you know? old habits…So I stared adoringly at Lucy instead and bounced along (in my seat) although the old songs took a while to feel like normal.
SO we talked a bit more then I used the old female tactic of the loo to think to myself for a bit; there's no attraction there any more, you know, I have no desire to be with him again, and I finally clicked, similar to the feeling that spurred yesterdays entry, I miss his friendship, and I miss what it feels like to be in love. Sometimes I wonder how love happens, or why, and why things change, but it does and they do. I miss having someone that I really could tell everything to at any time and they would make it all right. I know this isn't something you achieve quickly, and to be fair he never knew me completely, which is probably why things changed, but I realised that I'd missed him as a friend.
The final relief came when I asked him why he'd stopped emailing, and he didn't seem to realise that he had! He doesn't have net access at home now so he only ever pops on for band stuff, and he said he'd forgotten whose turn it was. So there was never any vindictivness or intent, and he hasn't read this for months!
So, now everything (as far as I can see) is fine, I'm happy, he seems happy, the band's doing well, and to top it off I had a wonderful, slightly psychedelic night over at Jo and Paul's flat, with much red wine and 70's music. I love their hippy pad!
Thanks to everyone for your comments yesterday, and I hope that anyone else who has fallen out with their ex's can actually carry out the line of "We'll still be friends", if that dread line was uttered at the end.

T–minus 4hrs 15mins max
Follow-up to Teaching, Day 2 from Claire Blogden
OK, this evening I am going an Arlen gig.
It's going to be fine because Lucy, Russ, Ben and Dave have all asked after me to go, and I know at least Jo and Paul will be there and possibly Kimmy, Anton etc aswell. But of course, this is the night I see Simon for the first time since Christmas, and speak to him for the first time since above entry.
I don't know if he read that and that's why he stopped emailing, or if it was because I didn't reply to his email. The wierd thing is I've actually grown up over the last twelve hours, since recieving some information I'm propbably not supoosed to have but suspected all the same, to realise that I really have to handle tonight carefully.
Part of me, the part at the fore-front of my thinking, had this idea that I had to breeze in, and, I dunno, I guess it's my vanity but I was on the brink of playing the very game I don't want to play; the "My Life is Better than Yours" game. I had to make out everything was perfect because I suspect he'll be doing the same. But then I remembered we were supposed to be staying friends, and how am I going to do that if I go in there with a head the size of the bass amp?! My life is far from perfect, and why shouldn't I be honest with him? Besides, I know someone in that room whos life is far worse and who actually has problems so I can't make it all about me, and I have to be so careful that I don't! (I'm quite good at that you see!)
So, yeah, it has the potential to be a really good night, I just have to set the right tone, so I can be guilt-free at the end of it!
Any advice/thoughts on possibly the most personal blog entry ever by me?!

WHO IS THE HALF–BLOOD PRINCE?
Ok, I know it's Easter, so happy-second commercialised Christian festival of the year, everyone. I hope those who it means something to have a good day and the rest of us get fat off the chocolate they provide.
But, more importantly I've decided to set up a discussion on who the half-blood prince will be, that is the character refered to in the sixth (and penultimate) Harry Potter Novel by J K Rowling. Even those of you with the vaguest, perhaps only film-only knowledge of the story can still join in.
The candidates are;
Lord Voldemort; for some reason when I read the title I assumed the prince was an evil character, perhaps because of the reference to blood. But as we all know, half-bloods aren't necessarily evil, infact it's pretty much pure-blood wizards you have to look out for.
Still, the Dark Lord himself had muggle (or boring, non-magical) parents, so he is in with a good chance.
Harry Potter; I'm hoping it isn't him, cos it would be boring to have the main character get all the good stuff, although I guess that's why he's the main character. Harry's mother Lily was from a muggle family. I'm not sure about his dad, does anyone know if the Potter's were a pure-blood family? I'm presuming not.
Hermione Granger-muggle parents although she is female, which would make her more of a princess and the title more of a give-away!
Ron Weasley; I think, even though the portrait of Sirius' mum and the malfoys lay into the Weasleys all the time, they are a pure-blood family, aren't they? correct me if I'm wrong…
Draco Malfoy; as I've said, no way. He hates half-bloods so even the title of "Prince" wouldn't make him consider being one!
Dean Thomas; his parents are indeed muggles, but he's had so little to do in the stories, appart from joining the DA, that it wold be totally surprising, and sometimes that's just not JK's thing!
Neville Longbottom; as cool as it would be for him to have something cool happen, both his parents are magical.
Rubeus Hagrid; Half blood? Extremely! half giant and magical he's one of the most mixed up characters in the book. Strong possibility, but what he's do with the title I'd dread to think!
Remus Lupin; Again, I'd love to see this man get the credit he deserves, but I have no clue about his lineage and somehow, I just don't think so!
So, based on the evidence, place your votes in the handily supplied comments box below!

11. "Fairy" or "Fearie"?
Yes I know I spelt the second version wrong, so "Faerie" it is, especially the Froudian variety!
12. JK Rowling or Phillip Pullman?
I'm going to choose Pullman, even though I love JKR and can't wait for "The Half-blood Prince" (does it mean He-who-must-not-be-named? his parents were muggles…at least we know it isn't Draco…posh git!) but Pullman has so many varied books as well as deeper subject matter in "his Dark Materials" so I think he's a better author.
13. Harry, Ron, or Hermione?
Hermione, because she can actually do magic competantly, and could probably win against the Dark Lord if she ever faced him becuase she's that clever.
14. Are Demons a good idea, or would you rather not have to see yourself that clearly?

I stole this!
Writing about guh! from Talking Behind the Psychic's Back
Hehe, I decided to do the quiz thing from Eimer's blog, but for some reason had to select the whole thing to copy the questions over! Wierd, huh? But yeah, I'm thinking of inventing my own version of one of these, but thought I'd do some more research first. And yes I have done work today! I've read through the Y2 handbook (which only arrived about 4 weeks ago) to see just how scarily little time I actually have to fix things but that I am actually on target for my year. Horray!
1.What Time is it now?
11:01am
2.What is your full name?
Claire Margaret Bowden.
3.Single or taken?
Taken.
4.What does your name mean?
erm…I don't know…hang on…
Claire is Latin and means bright and clear…
Margaret from the Persian means child of light, from Greek it means Pearl, and from Shakespeare "Henry VI part 2", wife to Henry the VI. (I don't like the last one-the histories are bloomin' boring!)
And Bowden was Anglo-Saxon meaning messanger. I didn't expect to find "Bowden" on link (the first google result for "meanings of names" but, there you go! I'd always hoped it was Celtic…)
So anyway, Clearly lit messanger. With a pearl.
