Crash– 04/11/05

Did anyone get to Crash last night? Seriously, I'm not sure I've ever been to such an awful union night! Don't get me wrong- usually Crash is an excellent night out!

Perhaps it was the fact that it's reading week, perhaps it was cos people will be out tonight for bonfire night (well who knows!) but Crash was empty. Also, the music was shocking- who plays dance stuff at Crash?? I struggle to think of one punk or rock song that was played- Actually I think I enjoyed only one song during the entire night- it clearly made a good impression too because I can't even remember what it was! What I do know is it came on as I was eating a Battered cheeseburger (mmm!) so I couldnt dance!

Well perhaps it got better later on, I left at 1 because it was so awful! Anyone else share my grief?? Whats wrong with the Crash of the good old days? Now I think about it, I'm not surprised the union was so empty when the music was so bad.

Whine.

Yeah, it's been going downhill all this year. These new girl DJ's seem to be playing a lot less rock and punk music, and more mainstream indie stuff.
I don't know if the setlists are influenced by union officials trying to get more people in, however I think myself and others will have to start looking at rocksoc and punksoc events in order to hear the music played at crash the last two years.

It wasn't as good as it usually is but were you at the same Crash I was at? It did get better later on. I'm fairly sure I heard SOAD, Marilyn Manson, Pantera, Rammstein. Ok it was a little light on the punk and ska, but there was definitely rock.

And Matthew, what's with picking out the DJs' gender? That really doesn't matter surely?

  3. Well the playlists posted elsewhere on wb seem to suggest that, other than a run of four dance songs, no other dance music was played.

What dance music? Seriously – WHAT dance music?

I can see The Prodigy (which they've said was the most requested song of the night, so fair enough), and Chemical Brothers….and that's it! If Gorillaz or LCD Soundsystem are 'dance music', then I'm a dutchman…

Fair enough on the lack of punk though, and if they play Killing in the Name of one more time, I think I'm going to scream…

  5. It did get better after you left, despite the fact that the Crowd Safety guy told us off when we started the mosh pit. I didn't hear what he actually said, but it seemed like he didn't want us moshing. But everyone ignored him and we managed to get a good mosh pit going. In the end, this was much better than the Week 3 Crash when the bands didn't get off until half 1. If Crash is going to be good, the bands need to be off by midnight at the absolute latest.

  6. The playlist can be found here. Maximum of two dance songs there.

Personally, I prefer the very slightly more mainstream playlists of this year – and so do many/most other people: the clue's in the word "mainstream". This is an argument that comes up after almost every Crash, but essentially if you're looking for less mainstream music, a full-on Marketplace event is not where you're most likely to find it; it leaves the dancefloor too empty. This has been shown to be the case over the last couple of years – the dancefloor was always at its fullest when the well-known indie/rock songs were played out. The Union has two great societies in RockSoc and S:Punk – use & enjoy them!

  7. The greatest Crash of all time was two years ago, in the Cooler, with a band called The Koreans playing following by several hours of the greatest rock songs known to man.

Ironically though, that was a one-off crash DJ'd by RockSoc.
