All new business and economics students will have library sessions as part of their induction programme. These are likely to run in the first few weeks of term. In the meantime you may find the following links useful:

The Economist Special Report: Latin America

Last week the Economist published a Special Report on Latin America. The report, written by Michael Reid the Economist's Americas Editor, looks back on the past 200 years in the history of Latin America. It focuses on the region's struggle for political independence and its growth and development over this period.

The report includes a number of articles on the democracy, society and economy of the region and features an audio segment on Latin America at 200:

Where can I find Harvard Business Review articles online?

Harvard Business Review (HBR) is available in full-text through the library’s subscription to Business Source Premier.

To access HBR articles follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the library catalogue and do a title search. To narrow your search, choose ‘Journals’ from the Select Collection menu.

  2. Click on ‘Harvard Business Review [electronic resource]’ then follow the link to Business Source Premier.

  3. You will be taken to the publication page on Business Source Premier for Harvard Business Review. From here you can browse issues using the ‘All Issues’ navigation. Alternatively you have the option to search within the journal.

Market report: Private Equity 2010

Yesterday TheCityUK released its latest report on the global Private Equity market. This report analyses trends in private equity investments and fund raising for 2009 and the first half of 2010.

Summary of findings

  • Global private equity investments fell by half from $181bn in 2008 to $91bn in 2009. Investments of UK private equity firms echoed this fall.
  • At 6.3%, global M&A volume generated from private equity backed activity was at its lowest in a decade.
  • Global fund-raising fell by two thirds from $459bn in 2008 to $150bn in 2009.
  • The UK has held its position as the second largest private equity centre.

EIU Global Forecasting Service

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has recently launched the Global Forecasting Service. This service provides forecasts for the world economy in the form of a monthly report. In addition you can find outlooks and analysis for specific regions, commodities and exchange rates. Analysis is also provided on global risk and world trends.

As well as the monthly report the data can be downloaded as an interactive chart or summary table.
