KBAM post module 3

some thoughts on explicit and tacit knowledge.

I have been reading on explicit and tacit knowledge. Nonaka (1995) in the Oxford paper has clearly defined both knowledge and distingush between them.

relating them to the MBE learning

the MBE class has finished and the experience was great.

We have gained a lot through lectures and mini projects and these are what we said tacit knowledge.

however there are more that we can learn from explicit knowledge. everyone i believe in the class has learnt so many differet things within this year. During the year, through forums and debat we have shared others' experience and this is one of the method how explicit knowledge are transformed to tacit knowledge

I found it particularly useful to learn from others and if one person can learn from e.g. 5 people then that means he/she has already obtained 6 people's knowledge (including itself).

from now on, blogs would be a platform for us to share our explicit knowledge and hence transofrm it to become tacit knowledge.

KBAM post module 2

After I have read the Health & Safety Act 1974, i have realised that it is a 100 pages long act and there are so many regulations attached to it. It is a fairly complicated fact with responsibilties attached to both employers and employees. Just a little thought after i have read it.

Obviously it carries the advantage of keeping the work environment safe. however the complication might stop potential entrepruners to stop from starting a business. Furthermore would those employees found that most of the issues are repeated and they might find that there are so many red-tapes to follow the whole legislation.

Finally some companies might decide to get away from the act by not directing employin people. Instead, they will ask their employees to register as self-employed so that they can get away from compensation and responsibility if injuries are occured

KBAM post module 1

For the PMA, we have to examine how one aspect of AM, we would apply KM to to help WaveRiders to achieve excellence performance.

Therefore the first stage would be the process of chossing an aspect of AM. Having done a review on the mini-project that our group has produced, I have chosen Health & Safety as the aspect for this PMA.

The reason being is because of personal experience at work, during the induction day/week, the first priority for the manager to show me is the fire exit and other elements that are related to Health & Safety.

In the UK, the legislation clearly defines that employers have to obligation to provide a safety environment for their employees to work in. Failure to do so could be sued.

Human are the most important asset in the company, therefore I believe that by having a good health and safety policy and procedure in place could help the company to prevent it's asset (human). On top of that, organisations could face hugh compensation cost if employees suffered from injuries at work.

Therefore there is a need to trasfer the heathy and safety issues around the company and ensures that all employees are fuly aware of them. There are various ways to do it, which will be examined in the PMA.

KBAM 3 (reflective of seminars and group work)

the seminar in a debating style is really interesting and it enhanced our interest on the topics

although it has been rasied that research has not been carried enough...... however I still think that we had sufficient amount of information.....

the debating manner was really good then.... atmosphere was good....

appreciate to Paul for his prepartion ......... such as the ground rules he set for the debate

Finally listensing has been largely improved by everyone.... this is because in a normal seminars people would not normally pay that much of an attention to the speaker..... while in a debate we have to carry active listening.

For the group work.... our team has done a great job.... really appreciate my team members.... we have put some effort and in return we had fun and I really enjoyed it...

Tasks were cleared...... everyone had a chance to do the meeting
potential leaders can be seen... we have been much better than when we first started the course

KBAM 2 (steps for implmentation)

Steps for implementing an effective knowledge management program or practice are:

1. Identifying knowledge - Organizations needs to identify all sources of the knowledge and information so that it can be consolidated, stored in the centralized or distributed repositories, and shared and distributed when required.

2. Organizing Knowledge - Once the knowledge sources are identified, next step is to organize and provide structure to knowledge into organizational taxonomy. It helps not only in removing unnecessary and redundant information but also provides structured navigation to the information. In this step, organization need to understand boundaries of explicit and tacit knowledge. This step requires lot of thoughtful thinking and analysis from people and organization perspective.

3. Transforming Knowledge - Knowledge needs to transformed in a way so that it facilitates in making decisions and building new strategies. The knowledge needs to internalized, socialized and externalized so that it is shared and applied in most efficient manner. Further read 'How to transform the tacit knowledge into explicit form?'.

4. Measuring knowledge benefits - No process can be improved if it it is not measured for success. The key to success of knowledge management is the ability to measure the effectiveness of the implementation and narrowing it down to returns through revenue. The monitoring and control on processes are necessary to identify opportunities for eliminating redundancy and allow for continuous improvement.

KBAM 1 (health & Safety)

How Health & safety related to asset management??

UK figures in 2004/05 shows that 220 workers were killed at work....

this is scary..... relating that to the company's finance book,

company has a large bill to pay for the compensation once they found guilty of not doing the right thing for health and safety proceduer,,,,,...

personal experience at work, during the induction week, the first session if not the most important one will defintely be health and safety.........

Leadership 3 (Coaching I recieved in the past few days)

In the past week i have been doing my leadership PMA.........

I struggled a lot at the beginning and I have been asking my coursemates about ideas and structure...

I realised that the process of seeking advices from coursemates is actually a form of coaching......

special thanks to Kang Fan, Toon, Manual, Mehul, Alan etc to name but a few

I found out that when they were trying to help me....... all acted as a coach and none of them had identical style

i would sum up from this experience by saying that the most important factor is to pay attention and to listen to the problems and situation the coachee is at.

then try to think in his point of view and analysis the situation for him to choose.....

Leadership 2

during the PMA period, I have read a lot about transformational leadership.

to my understanding it is when leaders become strong role models for their followers.

they have their own values set and this leadership style is particular useful when a changed is required

it is also common for transformational leaders to create a vision, it gives an idea where the commpany is going to go

Furthermore a vision gives followers a sense of identity within the organisation.

Six Sigma 1

Six Sigma is the sixth standard deviation in a normal distribution curve which aims to catch defect 99.9999998% of the time

Sound complicated........

in the other word it is a process which aims to reduce defect level and hence improve qulaity...

Leadership 1 (Coaching)

Recently there has been a concern about my PMA and Paul had offered me a chance for a discussion.

Thanks Paul for the sharing and that actually helps me a lot and i have done a lot of thinking after that.

'The most important element is learn from your mistakes' this is very true and I will sort my time management as well

What we have discussed is too long to go into the blog but a little bit of thinking refeering back to leadership

'the whole discussion with Paul was like a game of coaching. I was being a coachee obviously and I gained a lot. Paul started the discussion didn't really say anything. He gave me the opportunity to start and to share what i think before he gave any comments and suggestions. To me this is exactly how a leader should be- 'a good listener' then he analysis the situation and brought up encourage words and made me feel positive.

I am feeling more relax now and concentrating on my work and planning for X'mas
