No Decision?

Discussing decision making is always about how to make a decision robust. However, what do we think of not making a decision at all?

not making a decision can be either good or bad decision. it is good when it is resulted from making a robust decision to not to take/delay action. this decision is based on information that support it.

on the other hand, it is bad when somebody thinks that nothing will go wrong if they do not take any decision/action. so they take a decision not to make decisions based on fear/psychological concerns.

arguably, both involve decision making that result in not making decisions. Differentiating both is important to be aware of how robust our decision are. Moreover, it helps in creating self-awareness that can be a base for developing personal decision making skills.

  1. I agree with you Ayham that not making a desision is also a desision and that there are to aspects for taking this approach. my question is, is not taking a desision not like all the others alternatives of answers? I mean that all answeres or desisions can be made by analyzing them and makind a robust desision or just chosing them because we are afraight from the consequences of chosing another option.

  2. Don’t you think that this approach is a bit fatalistic, just leave it all to destiny by not making any decisions even if we check the arguments whether it is better to decide or not? I haven’t made up my mind yet… just food for thought…

  3. Thanks Ivo, Fani,

Ivo, yes exactly. It is similar to other decision making. However, it is different that it can be, sometimes, a result of not having confidence. The idea is that we have to be aware of why we delay/do not make a decision at this point. I.e. it is not resulted from us having decision making problem?

Fani, I like the food stuff ;). Regarding your comment, I think being fatalistic, although I like fate sometimes, is frequently used by people who have problems in decision making and which they take as a justification for not making decisions. My post is about creating self-awareness in this area (why we don’t make decisions?). A healthy ‘no decision’=’delay’ is when we study the situation and decide with confidence that it is better to delay any action at this point.

Many people who make a rational decision to delay action can be acused of having problems in making decisions. Having the confidence and self-awarness is something important for decision makers in business.
