The lab is deserted

Where is everyone? They have all abandoned me.

Fnah. Shall wait for my little PCR (oh work, please work, you know you want to!)

Ok, I've had it with dead sheep

NB. Not real sheep.

I think I need a hug

(And yes I am aware it's donkey that says it)

The results are in..

Writing about an entry you don't have permission to view

And there was rejoicing, happiness and lots of fluffy bunnies holding up signs saying 'Yay!!' in the little word of Anna..

Aren't they just too darn cute!!

That may mean nothing to most people, and admittedly the gel doc is crap so the photos don't come out well, but to me it means that after three weeks of slaving, I've finally managed to extract DNA from the majority of the little bastards!!

Bridge jumping is now officially postponed :)

The squidge debate..

Am currentlly on a squidge removal regime, since summer is a coming, and choir tour is to Barcelona and I rather fancy acquiring a tan (since both previous tours have involved lots and lots of rain. Bear in mind this is not some watercress soup and leek diet, it's just healthy eating and regular visits to gym. But was talking to Siggy about this yesterday, and I was told off. Apparently, squidge is good. Now in winter it doesn't particularly bother me as 'tis covered up and keeps me warm, plus in winter I have a tendency to consume an inordinate number of jaffa cakes and fondant fancies. However come summer time, out of the woodwork (or somewhere) all these perfectly tanned toned slim beautiful females come. Hmph. So, this year, since am paying member of a gym, figured I might as well try and provide a bit of competition. I personally don't find my squidge particularly attractive–it's there and I can never seem to get rid of it. But is it actively a bad thing to try and get rid of it?!

Career options..

Current career debate. Should I do a Phd. On the one hand, I love my subject and it's a paying job, on the other hand, I would get addicted to coffee and it's really quite scary and something only really clever people do. That said am really quite enjoying labs at the moment and would love more time to get my teeth into it. However, at the moment labs also quite stressing me out (though this is partly due to time pressure) since I can't get any f***ing DNA out of my bugs, which I need to be able to start all the joys of PCR (which never works for me anyway). On consultation with my supervisor it transpires primers may be wrong. If so this will balls up my project no end.

Killing them with phage is fuun though..

Sensing a general lack of un-hugged people around in my life. This is not the way it should be. I think people should hug each other more. They make the world go round.

As a result:

HUGS FOR EVERYONE!! (and if you actually know me I'm happy to dole them out:) )

Have just managed to snap CD drive. I take it this is not good. What on earth do I do now?! It won't close or anything!!

Travelling, jobs…fnah.

Just spoken to my lovely mother on the phone. I swear my father travels more than he used to!! They got back from Washington DC on Thursday, my Dad then went to Amsterdam on the Friday, and is now on his way to Brazil. Then next week he's going to Seoul for a week, and then the following week he's going somewhere else. All of this is interspersed with 'day meetings' in Amsterdam/Brussels/Paris etc. I really don't know how he does it. My Father has travelled a lot ever since I can remember, and I've always hated it, because it means he's constantly tired/jetlagged, because he's always travelling means he has to work at the weekends, and my mother gets miserable every time he goes away because they're inseperable and now we've all left home she gets very lonely. I've always thought I'd like a job where I travelled. But I'm not sure I could handle one where travelling was so much an integral part of it. Sure my parents have had interesting lives, lived in several countries, but the choices they've had to make have been big ones, and have a big impact on our family.

Since the major part of my mother's telephone conversation was an argument about me knowing (or not knowing as is more accurate) what I'm going to be doing next year, the whole job thing is something I really have to think about. I really don't know what I want to do though. Maybe doing a Phd isn't such a bad idea after all..

Bless my mother..She gets a digital camera, promptly emails all three of her children to proclaim this fact (though she is technologically inept and as a result the email came in a very odd format) with a lovely photo of my granny.

This is my granny. She's nearly 89 and she rocks. 6 children, married her professor(completley self obsessed academic) at the age of 21. Used to get under the family car to fix it when it regularly broke down. Does just about every charitable thing going. Looks after all of her friends. Can recite poetry at the drop oif a hat. One of the wisest people I know, with a wicked sense of humour.

I can only dream of being like her when I'm older. I've been thinking a lot about getting older recently (no idea why, maybe it's the whole graduation/job prospect) and seeing as how it's inevitable I figure the only thing to keep on doing is smile.

After all, you should fall in love with someone's eyes and/or smile, because they're the only things that never age.
