Beards
This has been the topic of some debate recently (for whatever reason..). For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I feel this rather useful diagram might help:
Yes. Beards. I, being a girl, obviously don't have one myself. But I know many men that do. And I don't get it. Ok, there's laziness, which I can understand. And I admit, that in some cases, a guy might look better with a beard. But if you unless you have the softest beard hair known to man, any time you get within, shall we say 'facial contact' (hugs etc..) of someone without a beard, you are likely to inflict pain. Trust me, I know. Am I the only female that finds this a problem? Do I have particularly sensitive skin? And of females that do have regular contact with a beard-how on earth do you cope?
In defence of beards, however, I guess.. there's always something to stroke whilst pondering deep philosophical quesions.

Hmm, I wonder which particular young man this post could be about?...
Hehe.
As to your last point, is this why almost every famous philosopher is male?

Sam's beard is explained!

Is it? How?! Who's Sam?!
Am not scared of beards, per se .. I'm just not very tolerant of them..
You might have a point there Simon..

I have no idea. I hate not being clean shaven though, I feel fuzzy within me.

Sam is a bearded philosopher and hardcore blogger.

His self-portrait
Do beards help Physics students too?
27 May 2005, 12:13
Ahh.. that Sam! Now I understand..
Fuzziness not good.
As to physics students, I couldn't possibly comment!

lazyness.
27 May 2005, 14:39
cough
They have their uses… namely covering up what's underneath :P

Or… laziness :P

I think beards can look awesome! I heard that this famous guy (whose name i forget) made his beard into a scarf. :D
But beards only look good if they have comedy intent.
But father christmas has a beard…so they can't be all that bad!
27 May 2005, 20:41
Well I look funny anyway – so the beard is just a comedy alternative.
Hmm you'd think that as FC only works one night a year then he'd have ample time to shave… Anna might be right on the laziness front, but only in this case it seems
28 May 2005, 12:51
"FC"? Now that's the height of acronym-based typing laziness!
28 May 2005, 20:21
Who's FC?
29 May 2005, 10:37
Aww Siggy.. Big white beard, visits around 25th Dec, alcoholic, fond of animals?
29 May 2005, 15:13
Better retract the last two statements there, Anna – Lapland's layabout libel lawyers (ooh, alliteration!) are watching with interest ;-)
29 May 2005, 17:16
:-$ More than a tad embarrased…
30 May 2005, 08:50
Lol Chris!!
30 May 2005, 18:24
:-( Don't laugh at me, I'm slow…
30 May 2005, 18:57
Awww….we like you anyway. So does FC.
31 May 2005, 12:12
Yes we do. And I'm sure he does. Although he probably doesn't like me, having accused him of being an alcoholic. But for some reason, when my dad puts out a glass of his nicest brandy, it all goes. I don't know where. And think about it, if everywhere he visits puts out a glass of brandy, he must be well over the legal limit for sleigh driving. Think about it.
Such a bad example to children..
31 May 2005, 12:21
What's the legal limit for sleigh driving then, clever clogs?
01 Jun 2005, 15:06
I'm guessing a sleigh when airbourne for any exctended period of time would be claissfied as an aircraft. The civil aviation legal limit is absolutely zero alcohol in the blood (it's illegal to drink 12 hours before a flight I think), but as far as the military goes there are no strict guidelines as such as far as I'm aware, although you don't get pissed fighter pilots flying very often!
01 Jun 2005, 15:54
Well not for very long anyway…
01 Jun 2005, 16:14
Not necessarily! It has happened before…. Although given the alcohol tolerance of most fighter pilots I know, a few pints would barely affect them at all!
01 Jun 2005, 16:16
I just want to say i HATE shaving…I am inept…i cut myself
lots
and takes ages to stop bleeding
hence shave as little as possible…good job i am not a real man and can only grow a bit of fluff
01 Jun 2005, 19:41
Yeah, I hate it when you know so many fighter pilots you lose track… :-s
Didn't the Americans develop LSD to give to pilots of combat aircraft? And aren't there allegations that a lot of air-to-ground 'friendly fire' incidents in the Gulf happened with US pilots who were dosed up on various mysterious cocktails of stimulants?
01 Jun 2005, 19:49
Lol sorry, that comment didn't mean to sound like that! Seeing as I'm the son of one, I know a fair few because I've met a lot of Dad's friends…
There are quite a few rumours about Dexterine being used by the Americans to boost pilot's reactions and combat fatigue, but nothing has ever been proved. Again with the Gulf war, stimulant use has been cited as a cause of "Friendly fire" (not much friendly about it but anyway!).
And Thomas, buy an electric razor!

Ugh… there you go again Simon, throwing my picture around like there's no tomorrow. For goodness sake be careful man – you never know when they are watching…
