I bought this book at Gatwick Airport on the way to our family holiday this summer and not knowing much about it but it proved an excellent read. I ended up spending a good part of the holiday engrossed with this excellent and well laid out book.
After reading a few chapters in the book, it became very difficult to leave the characters.
Andrea Levy writes each chapter from another charaters prespective giving the reader a great incite to the characters thoughts and feelings. This also brings the reader closer into the book- making it hard to leave.
Andrea uses this character based narrative for the four characters the story is based on- Hortense and Gilbert,Queenie and Bernard- which is perfect so as not to confuse the reader.
I was dissapointed when it ended; i wanted to follow these characters for a while longer especially the link between Queenie’s baby and Hortenses’ past in Jamaica..This book comes highly recommended!!!
