Another great read..

5 out of 5 stars

A Thousand Splendid Suns was a great read; I just couldn’t put it down. The characterisation was really good and a real empathy for the characters built up. The characters are strongly, if not always fully, drawn and we are made very much to empathise with Mariam at first as she is taken to be the wife of a much older man, Rasheed, who turns out to be very cruel, and later Laila, the second, younger and more passive heroine, who is tricked into marrying the same tyrant. The relationship between the two women grows and their suffering and tribulations are described in great detail, so we are drawn into their lives very much.

The ending was the biggest disappointment though with the return of another character which was just too neat, It just convinced me of one feeling I had frequently during the reading, that I was being manipulated a little too obviously into feeling specific things about specific people and events.

I’ll let you make your own mind though but i give kudos to Khaled Hosseini as he is a good story teller

Interesting but a difficult read..

5 out of 5 stars

I bought this book after listening to book of the week on Radio 4 in 2007 and its taken me this long as it is not an easy book to review.

Recent occurences where the book has been torn apart by reporters claiming the book to be inaccurate in terms of time frame and events has prompted me to offer my own 2p. I’m not going to say that it is okay if only most of the facts are correct and not going to dwell on the fact that he is a human being and not a professional writer but the book left me with a desire to learn much more about the region and I now know about the war in other parts of the world than I did initially and anyone that has been directly or indirectly affected by the carnage caused by wars will know where he is coming from.

To me that means that the book fulfilled it’s purpose. Read it
