Live Comment Preview
I’ve hacked a new feature into this blog, live comment preview. It requires that javascript is enabled and you have to be viewing the actual blog itself. It’s not capable of previewing all parts of textile, but it will work with the basic formatting syntax.
See if it works, i’ve only tested it on my PC.

Oh noes recursive iframe!
:)
Since HTML isn’t allowed in comments, a sensible improvement to the JS that you have would be a simple regex to ditch all HTML tags.

The problem with this is that it’ll lead people into a false sense of security that what they type will be exactly what results when you press Add comment, which may not always be the case if they’re doing complicated stuff. But then, they shouldn’t be doing complicated stuff in comments. And you could always replace it with an AJAX observer that calls the same serverside controller. That’d probably kill the servlet though :) tis only diddy.
