More Spellcheck fun

Follow-up to Spellcheck knows more than you think from The Ginger Revolution

So another long evening ironing out the creases in the Paper of Doom. Once again, it being sent to an American journal required me spellchecking it to make sure everything was spelt wrong correctly.

And so MS Word had it’s fun again. Here are some more chemical terms and their alternative as suggested by Word. Those in the know will appreciate one or two

biaryl = beery. Oh yes indeed! This paper would drive anyone to drink

homochiral = homicidal. I say nothing

protonated = proton Ted. A distant relation of Superted?

ligation = libation. Another drinking term. Me? Surely shome mishtake…

tautomer = teatime. From beer to food. Art imitating life

Acros = afros. ‘Afros Organics’ eh?

:-D

If you ever wondered…

Writing about web page http://www.transformersmovie.com

…what really happened to Beagle 2 then next July we'll find out!

What a curious film trailer. Would a film really build itself on a plot device that really is so cheesy as to be laughable? At least Professor Colin Pillinger would get to know that it did actually get to Mars. Maybe it's just an advert that will stand entirely separately

I've been quite curious about this film for a while, given the number of said toys i had when I was little (long ago in the mists of time). And the release date and trailer leads me to the following conclusion….

Released on 4th July '07…...just as Independence Day was released on 4th July '96. Subsitute Evil Decepticons for 15–mile–wide spaceships and Optimus Prime for Jeff Goldblum and I suspect that large parts of it may actually be rather familiar.

Oh and it's directed by Michael Armageddon/Pearl Harbor Bay. Give it a wide berth!

My email is broken again

If anyone out there has anything they'd like to say, chemistry related or otherwise, please leave a message below. Following the Coventry-wide powercut Groupwise is accessible, but no email is landing (but that's no real surprise anyway)

I suspect it may be devoted to bloodletting from Saturday afternoon's shambles.

Hey ho

Remember to source all your chemicals folks

Picture the scene. It is 1.30pm on a Tuesday. I am on SciFinder trying to find references for dynamic NMR of a mixture of diastereomers, in order to find the energy barrier to conversion.

This is the actual experimental of the first paper I came to. For anonymity, the authors names have been rmoved…

JournalArticle

No getting their chemicals from Aldrich then! But probably faster than ordering from Strem….

Sunday afternoon musings

1) Glad to see other people in the world-of-blog are as fed up as me with the chalk-all-over-the-pavement-and-everywhere-else following the Union Elections (not to mention being accosted every 50 yards by someone trying to thrust flyers in your hand) Are they now going to go round and remove all the related detritus that liberally adorns nearly every building/tree/bus shelter as well? Answers on a postcard…

2) The Football Association are a bunch of complete numptys. There was going to be an intemperate rant last week, but there shall follow one tomorrow. Hopefully, Travel Coventry can do their best and get me in a rage, to get the vituperative juices flowing…

3) Eating lots of chips/curry/bacon rolls (but only from Wednesday mind you)/Ben and Jerrys and beer/lager in a sustained 2 week campaign is not going to help you improve how far you swim in an hour on a Sunday afternoon. "Sunday Afternoon Idiot Swimmers" (no matter how old they are) also continue to be a source of considerable annoyance…

4) On a chemistry note, trying what I tried to do at 4pm this afternoon was most, most over-optimistic on my part and at my age I should really know better by now…

Computer glitches…

Shamelessly culled from an Oldham Athletic website…

A friend is having problems with his system. Last year he upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from Drinking Mates 4.2 which he had used for years without any trouble.

However, there appear to be conflicts between these two systems and the only solution was to attempt to run Girlfriend with the sound turned off. But, to make matters worse, Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications such as Lads Night Out 3.1; Golf 2.0 and Playboy 6.0. Successive versions of Girlfriend proved no better. Girlfriend 3.0 had many bugs and left a virus in his system forcing him to shut down completely for several weeks.

Eventually he tried installing Girlfriend 2.1 together with Girlfriend 1.0 only to discover that when these two systems detected eachother they caused severe damage to his hardware. Sensing a way out he upgraded to Fiancée 1.0 only to discover to his dismay that this system requires a rapid upgrade to Wife 1.0

Unfortunately Wife 1.0 uses up all available resources but, it does come bundled with Freesexplus, Cleanhouse2005 and Greatmealsontable (for a limited period)

Imagine my friend's dismay on discovering that Wife 1.0 can be unstable and costly to maintain. Any mistakes he makes are automatically stored by Wife 1.0 and can not be deleted – they then resurface months (or years) later

Wife 1.0 also automatically runs Ultra Strop and Whinge.zip and no option on the help menu seems to work leaving him to GUESS the fault himself. the system footprint needs regularly updating and usually can only be fixed temporarily by acquiring the latest edition of ShoeShop BrowserPro which seeks out expensive new attachments. Hairstyle Express needs installing weekly and there is a rather annoying pop-up called MotherInLaw that appears at the most inconvenient moments and can't be turned off.

Recently he has been tempted to try the Mistress 2005 add-on but, there could be problems. If Wife 1.0 detects the presence of Mistress 2005 it will delete all MS Money files before uninstalling itself, causing severe damage to his hard drive
