facebook: a Knowledge Management System

U guys may be thinking that am gone crazy, which I myself agree, I am seeing KM in facebook now! But I just cant help being facinated by KM!

I was going thorugh some literature regarding KM, and for a break, I log in facebook. The next thing that comes to my mind is, this is knowledge base too! and that too, quite an effective one (ofcourse besides all the crap that we share)!

How do I think it is so appropriate?

For instance, a friend of mine (fellow civil engineer) shares, he is at a site for tunneling right now in Srinagar. He has had this opportunity to visit the site as a part of his job. Though, this information is of no use for me today, but, in case I am in such a kind of situation, or have a project relating this, there it is, somewhere in the back of my mind, that he may know something about this. Maybe I can contact. Maybe, the day I contact, he doesnt have much to share, but on the other hand, maybe he knows somebody who has!

  1. Nice thought Awal – it makes me think of Google, possibly the biggest knowledge management system the world has ever seen. In fact, its very goal is to organize the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and useful. I think it does that quite well, it is my start point for almost every query I might have. Of course, you could argue it is only really good for closed searches, where you know what you are looking for. With open searches, it can be harder to find your answer, but the information is usually there somewhere. It also has the ability to communicate tacit knowledge in some forms, for example videos.

  18. Ohk, after all the jokes (:)) the question arises, Can a mini-facebook (only organisation specific) prove to be a successful knowledge management system?
Say, it is exactly the same in functioning, updates are shown on everyone’s page, and everyone gets to know everything happening around the company.
I think in large organizations, spanning across the globe, this should be particularly helpful!
You get a news feed of whats on with everyone in the organizations, and ideas are hence bound to cross!!

  19. AWAL a serious answer on that while facebook has a lot of petentialities to be used as a tool for knowledge development it can also restrain knowledge….I believe that this is what is happening in Facebook right now…...............

However yes it has a lot of potentialities and it depends mainly in the data added there…......

  20. Awal, I think that is an actually BRILLIANT idea. You should try and sell the concept of ‘Business Facebook’ to Mark Zuckerberg!

  21. Guys,
I just realized a flaw in this. I think, this is maybe a good idea but not for the shop floor workforce. Not everyone is working on the computer systems all the time, and I think it is probably most important to tap knowledge from the people on the shop-floor. Everyone is not educated enough (atleast in India) to be knowing how to use a sophisticated system like this.
