Oragisational learning

While studying organisational learning and demings and efqm I never thought of similaritites between them but as I work on my PMA I realise that these topics are quite related. I cant stop staring at my screen when i see similarities between the plan do chk act cycle and the single and double loop.  Never did it strike me that all three ol and deming and efqm  emphasize on continous improvement and team work. Would I have known how knowledge of variation could probably help an Learning Organisation adapt to External Surrounding.

Can a Leader be Nice

I have been discussing with Paul and also wondering on my own if a leader can be nice.  After going through so many team meeting and seeing so many different people lead I realised a team leader can be nice but he needs to know how to get work done and achieve goals. If she/he feels he or she is being taken for granted then I think thats where one should draw the line. All my team members are "NICE" good leaders but some know when to draw the line and some of us are learning including me. I have seen it in my personal experiences outside school that sometimes being too nice can lead to being taken for granted which is disasterous for a leader.

Performance appraisal and GE

I do not quite like the method of firing people who are in the last 10% slot in the company. I do agree that they do not fit there and they probably have other jobs that suite them but this is not always true. Sometimes it could happen that after all the bad ones are gone you will be firing the good ones who come in the slot. This will make the environment very competitive. This can lead to office politics and probably be a disaster for team work.

I really want to see if there is a good team in GE or not. And if there is how do they manage any competition which could exist.

Efqm Deming and learning org

Golden Rule of learning org......

Thrive on Change

  • don't be scared
  • Learning Organisations feed on change
  • go all the way (no half-way house); committed; focused
  • know objectives; plan

  1. Encourage Experimentation
  2. experimentation is a necessary risk
  3. individual input rewarded
  4. encourage throughout the company

  • Facilitate Learning from Employees
  • encourage participation and experimentation (linked to point 2)
  • invest in training - multiskilling (getting most from employees), morale
  • empowerment/responsibility
  • remove hierarchy

  • Reward Learning
  • everybody's wants their work to be appreciated - boost morale !!
  • benchmarks for performance appraisal
  • rewards

  • care for the individual
  • ways of implementing this care

I think efqm can help in benchmarking  for communicating sucess and faliure.

may be giving good examples of benchmarking can help in pma

Efqm also helps to have clear goals according to me

Deming helps to improve quality acordint to me

These are a few aspects I want to look into

Leadership and Direction

The word leadership itself has the word "LEAD in it. I think its important for the leader to lead as its important to tell the employee if his/her ideas, way or working is right or wrong. I think thats called leading. Showing someone the path is leading.

Demings Profound Knowledge too says that its important for leaders to have knowledge of the system, appreciation for the system and understand peoples psychology. Its important to moniter all aspects while leading. You dont have to tell employees what to do all the time but direct them when they go wrong or dont understand what they are doing.

If your employee thinks that you are not very intelligent then they might try to cheat you. To understand the employee and their actions its important to understand Demings profound knowledge

Leadership and Vision

Its very imortant for political leader to be visionary. They must know where they see their countires in a few year.

One of my favourite example is Martin Luther King and his famous words "I had a dream"..........

We are living his dreams.......we will soon have Barack Obama as the next president of United States......

I think its important for a leader of a organisation to be visionary too. He must decide wether he wants to expand on his current business or diversify. This is wholely dependent on the leader. I may be wrong.

He does not need to look into the daily acitivites....managers are responsible for that.........

The in class excercise today had similars results as to who should be the leader (Roger and Lyn) but the reasoning was different. Some felt that a leader should know how to manage different people with different skils while some felt he should have the skills. Lila then said he should be the comination of a good coordinator with good skills. That was a very interesting point.

Paul later told us in class that a leader if a function of leader, team members and situation. That made a lot of sense. I strongly feel that the leader should change according to the situation. Say after the survival operation is over and Roger and Lyn suceed. Once they reach the island then may be the leader should change then. May be Lyn should be the leader as she is a good orgainsational leader and will be able to make strategi plans to escape from the island  and  Ann should take over as deputy who has medical skills an good at calming people.

Alan is the leader of our group this module. He comes up with interesting ideas.  I like innovative leaders :)

Assumption, Pestle

Yesterday in the lecture hall I realised that hoow often we assume things and make our decidion. We saw parts of a movie called 12 men. The movie was about 12 men who were deciding if a boy killed his father. Since few of the evidence were against the boy, initiall almost everyone thought he was guilty. But after applying CRTICAL THINKING (Thinking without any biases, prejudice, other way, may be in others shoes how they would think or alternative way of thinking) they realized that the evidences were wrong and the boy was innocent. People just assumed that the old man (one of the vitnese) was right when he said that within 15 seconds he saw the boy run down the floor when he heard the noise of murder. But it was practically impossible for the boy to do that. Also the lady who said who saw the boy killing just before the lights went out was not very specks. This was got to light after critical thinking.

I realised how critical thinking is important. Another thing I learnt which was I really liked is the use of pestle. (pestle== Political, Economical, Social, Technology, Legislation and Enviornemt). Its import to look into all these factors while making strategic decisions. Its important to see for example what are the political problems such as high tariff or may be war with another country, or economical problem such as inflation, recession. After knowing the problems one can think of ways to carry on their business.

Class on personality was very interesting as well. Its so interesting to see how people with different personalities interact in different environment.

I have been working one my gbe pma since the last few days. It has been such an interesting experience. I have got so much more interested in international trade now. I barely knew anything about international trade but all of a sudden I find it so interesting how the world functions. Something that stayed well with me were some really interesting practices some follow in other countries.

I barely knew anything about the world financial crisis, or the sub prime morgage crisis. But now I know so much. I think this course is very practical as in the future too I see myself researching about international trade to know the trends and so on.

Researching itself is fun. Looking for information on Proquest or going to the library and searching for books......Its also fun to meet classmates in the library and nag about the length (4000 words...I think its too much...hahaha)...

Overall I would say that so far my journey in grad skool studying mbe has been very interesting...

Initially I thought I will not blog about the incident but then after contemplating about it myself and talking to Paul I realised its important to blog about this as it may help others who went through a similar incident.

This Friday while I was walking towards my on campus accomodation an incident occured. A guy from far called me an terrorist. Initially I was taken aback. I did not know what to do. I first thought to go and confront him for calling me a terrorist but then I realised that he was with a bunch of friends. He probably was drunk as well. I did not take it to heart. Instead of feeling bad for my self I felt bad for him.

I just feel bad for people who are ignorant and view any south asian person to be terrorist.

I just wanted to tell people who have had similar incidences to not let such things get to you. Other aspects of life are too beautiful to let such things affect you :)

Keep Smiling :)
