Yesterday (Monday October the 6th) we saw an video in class. The video talked about Demings teachings as well as why earlier Japense product quality was far superior from American product quality. This video gave us a good insight into how one can improve quality.
First and foremost continuous self assessment is really essential. It is really important to know where you stand and what you can acheive in terms of Product quality. This will eventually lead to continous self improvement. One can make use of Demings PDCA cyle -Plan, Do Check and Action to acheive continous improvement.
This could help get rid of any wrong policies or wrong procedure followed by the company such as the one seen in the white beed- red beed experiment where the incoming material was flawed. To improve quality the system in place (buying raw material, the process of conversion etc) should be good. A good system can be acheived by Demings cycle.
One also learnt from this video that it is important to keep your employees informed and give them guidelines to help them. This would help in preventing any mistakes which can be avoided and also remove all barriers that inhibit workers.
One of the important point of the video was that Cooperation should be achieved among company workers rather than competition. This will always benefit the company.

The class assignment of working on different questions in team and building a giraffe out of paper was really interesting. We learnt about the various skills of our team mates. All team members were very supportive of different ideas and all were very enthusiastic.
While answering the questions, our team further divided ourselves in 3 groups of 2. This helped us finish early. We also scored well in the question round. We came in second in the round.
While building the giraffe we came up with really good ideas, such as having strong legs to support the tall giraffe. Though we came last in this round we learnt important lessons in this round. I was amazed at seeing some really good ideas we brain stormed and implemented. The most important thing that came out of this lecture was that we broke the ice with our team members and reached a comfort zone with each other. We also learnt about our strengths and weaknesses.
