Knowledge Economy

While learning more about knowledge management i came accross a term that is knowledge economy. The move from an industrially-based economy to a knowledge or information-based one in the 21st Century demands a top-notch knowledge management system to secure a competitive edge and a capacity for learning.

The knowledge economy rests on three pillars:

> The role that knowledge plays in transactions: it is what is being bought and sold; both the raw materials and the finished goods

>The concurrent rise in importance of knowledge assets, which transform and add value to knowledge products

>The emergence of ways to manage these materials and assets, or KM

Reflection on Knowledge Mapping.

While working on the presentation I came across a very interesting term called knowledge mapping. Knowledge maps are visual representation of the organizations policies and procedures. They help organization in in streamlining company’s policies that gets communicated effectively for the users at one accessible place. Looking in the daily life every organization wants to be more agile to anticipate the threats and the opportunities available to become more faster as the world is moving so fast and to be more cost effective. To carry out this process more effectively organization should focus on capturing relevant knowledge that is evolving continuously and store it in form of texts, data models, pictures etc. The map serves as the continuously evolving organization’s memory, capturing and integrating the key knowledge of an organization.

Knowledge maps facilitates faster job and role orientation and training for new or the reassigned employees or the employees working on contract basis. Using these maps the workers can orient themselves by keying in on their organizational role and further navigating to their assigned responsibilities and then on to views of the rest of the enterprise to learn how it really works.

I would like to conclude by saying maps facilitate business management programs by reducing employee change resistance and by providing interim change designs for tracking the progress.
