Grid Analysis

Grid analysis is a tool that allows ranking a decision alternative based on its performance in regards to a certain performance criteria. However, there are certain issues when ranking alternatives. People can rank factors based on personal preference or compensatory heuristics. Preparing qualitative data can reduce dependence on intuition to make an objective decision.

Making an objective decision is very important to reach to a quality decision. Moreover, this focus and depth in analysis can demonstrate the robustness of a decision as the performance criteria are quantitatively measured. Any variation and robustness can be further identified by sensitivity analysis.

At work, This tool is very useful when developing various modifications. if multiple modifications for a machine are developed, GA can help in identifying how each modification perform in the machine various performance criteria. By using technical measures it would be useful to identify the optimal modification based on its overall performance.

I do agree with you Ahmed that certain modification enhance GA performance, however, even if someone have made it to be based on qualitative data, the judgment on these data wont be objective since they suffer from the same human bias effect. So from my point of view yes gathering all data from different sources might help, however, when it comes to rank factor a group decision should be control and not allowing members to affect on others ideas to avid non-stop discussion, maybe ranking should be on individuals’ brainstorming, which is very helpful in cases others might block team’s members ideas.

Nice thoughts Ahmed, thanks for sharing.

Good point Bu Salim. However, i failed to mention that a decision objective is linked to the business strategy the person would not rely on heuristics to select a certain decision criteria. Moreover, the qualitative data in my field “Engineering” is based on measurement which is purely objective and does not include estimation. Furethermore, i mentioned that a good practice of decision aanalysis is to be able to identify the root of subjective judgement to overcome it by using objective data. the point is focusing on being aware more than selecting a certain technique as the technique might change the decision maker can constantly try to be as objective as possible.
