Coaching exercise
Coaching task taught me a powerful skills to add for my leadership. A leader tends to make decision for his team as he is always requested to provide answers, some of which are not successful which leads to reducing his/her influence. Moreover, most of the time team members are more knowledgeable than their leader in the process or task as they are more in contact with it.
The task transferable skills are important as it provided me with few questions that are very effective and leads to generating the answer by the person seeking for them. It will also be helpful to assess the sound of their solutions to ensure that they are receiving the guidance of their leader.
In leading an engineering team it would be useful to coach them during troubleshooting. This will help to reinforce their confidence and theory in what should be done. Reflecting on PEUSS as well, i believe if coaching was coupled with fault tree analysis tool can be powerful tool. If coupled this will help to understand as a starting point if the issue happening is a direct component fault or a symptom resulted as a knock on effect due to a fault from another system.
Business simulation exercise
The leadership simulation task was very interesting and challenging. It was about investing in a hotel by renovation and managing it for 6 quarters. As the leader i had to understand the task, analyse it and make investment decision to select a hotel and the level of service.
The importance of this task was imbeded on the burden it carries on the leader and how to deal with stress. It helped me identify what characteristics should a leader have to get the whole team on board towards success.
When reflecting on my skills i understood That a big part of the leader role is to act as a coordinator. This happens in three steps; assess the required skills to successfully complete the task, assess the team skills and coordinate between both aspects to be able to have the whole team working as effectively and efficiently as possible towards the shared goal.
In my future career, I can carry on those basic skills to lead tasks and build on them by experience to shap the leadership standard i thrive for.
