The book that Karen chose was 'The Smartest Giant in Town' by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.
The review of this book is clear and comprehensive, with all the key points listed in a clear manner. It is clear, even without having read this book, how and why it is ideal for teaching EAL children in a whole class context.
Karen has chosen ways of utilising this book through the use of drama sessions. I was particularly impressed with the use of the 'big book' version and the suggested use of 'talk partners' to enhance the children's learning.
Each activity shows clear progression through the different quadrants discussed. Each activity builds on, or leads on from the first one, thus moving the children to the context reduced, cognitively demanding goal in the final activity.
I would feel very comfortable following this plan in a future literacy lesson, or series of lessons.
