Emergency General Meeting about AUT action!

The President has called an Emergency General Meeting for Monday Week 8 (5th June) at 7pm in the Ramphal Lecture Theatre.

The meeting will discuss the Union's stance on the AUT's current strike action. Please tell your friends as this issue is likely to generate considerable student interest!

If you wish to submit anything please e–mail me before Tuesday Week 7 at 4pm.

See you then!

Please, why in a week when exams are still going on? I realise the difficult nature of timing in this term, but when the main issue is going to concern the strike action, all interest groups should be represented. In this case there seems to be a serious division between finalists and other years, and yet most finalists will have finished whilst many other years will not.
First time I've felt genuinely disenfranchised by the union.

  2. You'd have to ask Kat Stark (President) as she decided the time/date of the meeting.

I know that a lot of my finalist friends will not be around in Week 9 or 10 as they have already started placements and such like. So putting it in Week 9 might not have worked either.

Also, 2nd year exams can (and do) go on until Saturday Week 9, so to make sure it was after exams we would have to put it in Week 10, and holding an EGM in Week 10 would probably not be a good idea.

I think any emergency meeting in Term 3 is going to be at a time when some people cannot be there, so unfortunately you cannot please everyone, but I definitely take your point on board that this meeting might have a disproportionate number of finalists (and perhaps arts students because our exams seem to finish earlier).

I smell a rat. Going by her other dubious underhand attempts to get policy passed the way she wants it (i.e. her significant contribution sneaking the abortion stance back through almost unnoticed after the debate had raged on for weeks and it had been changed), it wouldn't surprise me if Kat has called this EGM now because she knows it won't be quorate/will be poorly attended and therefore the Union will still end up holding the stance she clearly supports.

  4. You mean you think Kat called a general meeting in order to not change a policy? Wouldn't not calling a general meeting have had the same effect for less work?

And if you want to blame someone for putting the most recent motion mentioning abortion to referendum blame me, it was my idea.

  5. Not that I think there's any reason to blame anyone, but it seems some people must.

  6. I don't think there's any sinister motive.

Whenever this EGM had been held some people would have been unable to come. A lot of 2nd years have exams up until Friday and Saturday of Week 9, and a lot of 3rd years disappear before Week 10.

Please encourage everyone you know to come!

  8. Please, why in a week when exams are still going on?

I would assume that the meeting was called by signatures in which case Kat wouldn't have had much choice about when to call it.

  9. No it wasn't called by signatures. There were rumours that some students were going to get the 150 signatures needed to call an EGM so Kat decided to call one anyway.

I think whenever the EGM had been called it would have been unsuitable to one group or another, but Monday Week 8 might prevent a substantial number of 2nd years from coming, which is ashame.
