Politics and Philosophy – First Class!

I got my exam results on Wednesday, and am very happy to announce that I now have a First Class degree in Politics and Philosophy! :–)

I start training to be next year's Finance, Democracy and Strategy Officer of the Students' Union on July 1st, and take office on August 1st.

I am hoping to blog every week or so when I have my new job, so hopefully you guys will see a bit more of me next year!

Emergency General Meeting about AUT action!

The President has called an Emergency General Meeting for Monday Week 8 (5th June) at 7pm in the Ramphal Lecture Theatre.

The meeting will discuss the Union's stance on the AUT's current strike action. Please tell your friends as this issue is likely to generate considerable student interest!

If you wish to submit anything please e–mail me before Tuesday Week 7 at 4pm.

For some more details go to:

See you then!

Emergency General Meeting – Thursday 6pm in MS.02!

This Thursday (9th March) there is a Union Emergency General Meeting at 6pm in MS.02.

There have been three submitted motions:

1) Affiliating to 'Abortion Rights'
2) Not Boycotting Coca-Cola
3) Dogs and Rolf Harris

I would encourage all students to come, as this is likely to be quite a controversial and interesting meeting!

Finance, Democracy and Strategy

Hey again,

So the whole "writing a blog" thing never really happened for me. I had hoped to write an entry a week, but instead it's turned into an entry a term!

The big news of my life from the past month is that I won my election to be Finance, Democracy and Strategy Officer of the Union for next year!

If anyone does stumble onto this blog (and to be honest I'm not exactly sure how you stumble onto blog's unless they are on the main page) then I'd like to hear your comments about the Union.

Finance, Democracy and Strategy covers pretty much every area of the Union (except campaigning on education issues) so I would love to hear comments about how we can improve the Union.

Cheers,
AJ

So, I've decided to get a blog…

Heya,

My name is AJ Brown, I am 20 years old and a third year Politics student at Warwick Uni. My main interest at Warwick is Union Democracy, and I am starting this blog so that I can try and provide an interesting "behind-the-scenes" view of Union Democracy.

My roles in the Union:

  • Chair of Union Council
  • Chair of Steering Committee
  • Chair of the Westwood Working Group
  • Campaigns Committee Secretary
  • Welfare Committee Member
  • NUS National Conference Delegate

As you can see, I'm very involved! However, I try really hard not to become a Union "hack" (negative term for a Union insider who becomes cut-off from reality) and try and speak to as many people as possible about the Union. Again and again I hear two main things:

1) Drinks prices are too high
2) The Union doesn't represent me

These are the two biggest problems facing Warwick SU at the moment. Our commercial services are good, but prices are too high and our profit-margin is wafer-thin. Union democracy is good (compared to most Student Unions) but could be much, much better.

Over the next weeks and months, I hope to use this blog to assess where we are as a Union, and how we can move forward. If you ever have questions or comments then please post on this site or e-mail me: ucchair@sunion.warwick.ac.uk

I promise to get back to you ASAP (usually within 24 hours) and hope I can help :)

AJ
