Carmen Dominguez – Talk on World Trade Organization

Writing about web page http://misionchileomc.ch/cv%20carmen%20dominguez%20ingles.ht

Carmen visited Warwick today to give a talk on the World Trade Organisation development summits in Doha and Hong Kong from her perspective as the Chilean delegate to the WTO. She has an LLM from Warwick and is currently posted in Geneva to the Mission of Chile to the WTO and is in charge of services, intellectual property and investment.
(See link form more background information).

I chatted with Carmen before her talk and she was thrilled to be back at Warwick after 11 years. She was going to be staying for the weekend and have a good look around. She then spoke to a captivated audience of about 40 students about her work at the World Trade Organisation from her perspective as a developping country representative. She told us how those countries with least money have fewer representatives and that they therefore have to make alliances with other negotiatiors and create their own "friends groups". As a result, when one goes to one meeting the other can represent them at another meeting and protect their interests. Text messaging keeps them all in touch and up to date with progress in other meetings so they can decide whether to quickly run to that meeting! They all share information with each and form clusters of allies who meet late at night to work out their strategies before the next morning's meeting. She desribed negotiating rooms as theatres where everyone plays their rehearsed parts.

Carmen strongly believes that networking is the most important part of her negotiating job together with a good knowledge of languages, government laws and of course her Warwick LLM. In fact her social circle is mostly made up of other delegates and contacts. They go out and ski and a have few drinks and discuss the latest talks. It's not all work though she says, after explaining that she only had 10 hours sleep in 5 days whilst negotiating at the WTO Hong Kong summit!

There followed a Q&A session which lasted a whole hour so interested were her audience!

Warwick Graduates – Welcome to the WGA blog!

Writing about web page https://www.wgaalumni.co.uk/join.html

Hi there,

We are thinking about improving our services for our recent graduates and therefore, we would really like you to let us know what sort of things you would like the association to organise for you: be it reunions, careers support, mentoring or anything else.

What is it our recent graduates are really interested in? What are they up to?

May be you would also like to tell current Warwick students how life after Warwick has treated you? Has being part of the Warwick community helped you at all? What is different about being a Warwick graduate? How do you keep in touch with the University and your friends?

We would also like you to use this blog to let us and your Warwick friends know your views on any other subject which takes your fancy. Maybe you would like to know what certain places or employers are like? Maybe your are thinking about further study and would like to find out from other graduates what they did? Or may be you would like to share your recent holidays stories and snaps and tell us about your latest read? Or have you just done something extra-ordinary you would like to tell your friends about? It doesn't matter what it is – Blog it!

It's up to you. This is YOUR BLOG. Please use it!

Remember – The support you get from Warwick need not end when you graduate. All alumni who have enjoyed the benefit of an education at Warwick, be it on a degree course, a diploma or a certificate, automatically become members of the Warwick Graduates' Association (WGA) and have available to them a variety of services and contacts via the University.

In addition to this automatic membership, alumni can choose to take out subscription membership that entitles them to additional benefits as well as helping to support current students through some excellent and very worthwhile projects. Check out the Warwick Graduates' Assocation website when you have a moment. It's just for you!

If you want to get involved you could help out with careers' advice by becoming a career contact. Check out .

You can also have a say in how your Association is run by attending the AGM and getting involved with the Executive Committee and WGA Graduate Council. Your Alumni Relations Officer, Tess Robinson, will be able to give you further details. Contact her on +44 (0)24 7657 4417 or email her at "tess.robinson@warwick.ac.uk":
