Yesterday's excursion – Meriden, Berkswell, Kenilworth, Stoneleigh

My longest non-stop cycle ever, until yesterday, was only 18 miles, achieved on a very long scenic route to work on morning last month from Tile Hill to campus via Berkswell, Balsall Common, Kenilworth, Stoneleigh and Baginton. To cycle any further on the way to work I'd have to leave at 7:30 which I can't quite bring myself to do, so yesterday I took the morning off to aim for something a little longer. The plan was to add Meriden to the start of the route and to go from Stoneleigh to Baginton via Bubbenhall, and also to end up back home rather than campus, all of which should result in a ride of 25 milles or possible a little more.

As it turns out my right knee started playing up between Kenilworth and Stoneleigh so I cut out Bubbenhall and Baginton and ended up with this route:

22 miles taking 1h 40mins for an average of 13mph.

The good thing is that, apart from my knee, the rest of me coped very well with this route and had I been able to I'm sure I could have gone quite a lot further. I think I'll probably stop the long routes now until next year, but I'll have to work out a few longer ones for the summer…

Hi Steve, just wondering if all your cycle routes are suitable for road tyres, as that is what i have fitted at the moment, though i do have off road tyres but i dont want to fit them…

All of my routes are on public roads. There’s the occasional pothole that’s a bit of a shock on a hard road tyre, but otherwise you should have no problems. The bike I’ve ridden all of these routes with has 700c x 38 tyres, but they’re Specialised Armadillos inflated to 100psi and semi-slick.

    You won’t need off-road tyres…!
