Puncture–resistant tyres

Writing about Local cycle spares and repairs from Cycling to and around Warwick University

If you find you’re getting too many punctures consider buying the most puncture resistant tyres known to your bicycle retailer.

I agree entirely. If you are dependent on your bike for transport then punctures are a major inconvenience. A few years ago I had a run of 3 or 4 punctures in less than a week and that persuaded me to go for better tyres. Since then (over 2.5 years ago) I’ve had two flat tyres. One was a split in the tube at the base of the valve, hardly the tyre’s fault, and one was a “real puncture” caused by a very sharp piece of flint.

The tyres were £20 each, which seemed a bit much at the time, but they have been a very worthwhile investment. I do a lot of cycling at lunchtimes, and getting a puncture miles from the office would be a major pain. I wouldn’t feel comfortable going so far if I wasn’t sure I could get back. These tyres have done about 5k miles now and are still going strong. I’m sure cheaper tyres would have worn out more quickly as well as been less reliable. I’ll definitely be investing in similar tyres again, when these eventually wear out.

My Armadillos also run at 100psi, which makes them faster than my previous tyres that ran at only 60psi, as well as all the other benefits.

If you cycle regularly, and especially if you cycle far enough that getting punctures is a major inconvenience, then puncture resistant tyres are a worthwhile investment.

After waxing lyrical about puncture-proof tyres only a couple of days ago, what did I find when I went to my bike this morning? The rear tyre was flat. Well, almost. It was at about 30psi rather than the 100psi I pumped it up to on Saturday (it drop...
