Local Google imagery updated again
While browsing around this morning I noticed that the satellite imagery for this area, in both Google Earth and Google Maps, has been updated since last time I noticed. Can anybody spot any clues in the current images about when they might have been taken?

Fairly new since the building opposite CompSci and Maths is under construction, so I’d guess sometime in the past 6 months…

Well Jack Martin 4 (just to the east of the health centre) has skips and building stuff outside which places it between start of July and end of September last year.
The digital lab build opposite Maths and CS is still being built, and I’m pretty sure they weren’t that far along until at least mid-July.
The Maths extension has hardly begun so that must put it before September.
(I go running around campus so you tend to notice all this stuff!)
So I’d put it at about mid-August. And relatively early in the day judging by the shadows and the number of cars (and a couple of buses) about.

Work is also underway at the new Tennis Centre on Westwood, which if memory serves started late summer

Oooh interesting. What’s also interesting is that the Microsoft Virtual Earth version that is used for our Aerial View on the University website is even more recent

Must be September as there is a skip outside my neighbours house, which was being refurbished September/october.

Steve, and everyone….
Not sure about the date of these, and others seem to be more familiar with that, but if you’ve looked at the mapping on www.google.com recently (and you have to use the US site rather than the UK one), there is now a ‘streetview’ option available for many of the big towns and cities, and, yes, it does what it says on the tin- you can get a 360 view from points about 20 yards apart in many streets. Looking on the web into the open garage of my parents’ house in Michigan was quite staggering. and those pics are relatively new, probably no more than 7 months old…

The construction work at Millburn House is still mid-phase 2, which I can see by the blue bits immediately outside the Theatre Studies windows, so I agree that that would place it just prior to the start of the autumn term. There are no contractors vehicles and the construction work is very quiet, which means it’s almost certainly a Saturday or Sunday as on every weekday around then (as still now) the site and roads into the site were swamped with vehicles.

I’ve used Microsoft Virtual Earth so I thought I’d have a look and compare it to google maps, which I regularly use. On the closest view of Leamington it looked like my parents sitll had their apple tree in the back garden. This tree was chopped down years ago. To check I had a look at the centre of town. I’m pretty sure these were taken before the Royal Priors was built. Also there is no Restaurant and glasshouse in Jephson Gardens. Strange that some areas should be very up to date and for some areas the images are very old.

Oh and another thing strange about Microsoft Virtual Earth is that, as well as putting Warwick in it’s rightful place to the West of Leamington it has also put it just to the East of Kenilworth, in slightly different places dependant on the zoom.

It’s actually sticking it all over the place so it’s probably just telling you its Warwickshire rather than Warwick itself. Very confusing though.

Be interested to know when they update different areas – just checked Northants where I live and picture is at least 3 years old.

Looks like a weekday sometime between 7.30 am and 8 am as all the free parking spaces have been taken but the pay and display isn’t full.
