Flying plans for the Christmas break…
Thanks to being inspired by Christine's flying blog I've been building up a list of things I need to practice virtually when time allows. In no particular order these are:
- Clockwise circuits – I've always flown anti-clockwise for no obvious reason.
- Approaching Baginton from the other direction – I've always used runway 23, again for no particular reason, and need to give 05 a go
- More practice at Wellesbourne, which is smaller and more difficult
- A bit of cross-country flying to get the hang of longer-distance navigation
- Some practice with other planes in the air around me
As I keep saying, the main thing I can't do is land cleanly so I really need to get that sorted. As far as I can tell, the bit that causes me the most trouble is the final turn, because I'm useless and making sure I'm properly lined up as I come out of it. Maybe I need to practice turning?
The only trouble with planning on doing all this over Christmas is that I'm going to be at my parents for much of it. Maybe I need to put FS2004 on the laptop and take that, and the joystick. If anybody knows of a small but decent USB joystick…

Is it possible to fly from Baginton to Wellesbourne and take note of the headings using the Flight Sim?
When we took off from Baginton (runway 23) I had real trouble finding Wellesbourne due to very poor visibility. It would be helpful if I knew what headings to use. Bearing in mind if altitude is below 1500ft you have to fly round towns – to avoid falling foul of the low flying rules.
If this is possible with the flight sim – would you mind adding it too your list ?

One thing you don't have to worry about in a sim – nobody shouts at you for breaking the rules:-) Lots of scope for fun there, when you are in the mood!
Anyway, yes, I'll make a note of the headings next to I fly to EGBW. How big does a town have to be before I need to avoid it? If I fly down between Leamington and Southam, that looks like it should be OK. Yes? That would give me a nice approach to runway 36 too, I guess, circling right. Not that I'm any good at lining up right hand turns, mind you!
I might even manage a flight or two tonight, if all goes well.
I've put a map of Wellesboure airfield in my gallery, for reference.

Sorry instead of a town I should have used the term congested area – which is by definition anything big enough to appear on a CAA chart – I need to get one of those for the local area :-)
From what I know a village or even a hamlet is classed as a congested area

Eeek! No chance of flying a straight line between Baginton and Wellesbourne, then. Not at 1500' anyway. I'll have to get my maps out when I get home. I'm fairly sure I've got a 1:50k OS map of the area, which should do nicely. The CAA charts appear to be only £13.99 at Pilot Warehouse, which is less that I was expecting them to be. If the 1:250k scale is the one you are talking about, then perhaps it isn't so bad. The 1:200k map on Multimap doesn't seem to have too many places in the way.
I'll endeavour to have a go tonight and let you know how I get on. I'll record the flight and post the log here tomorrow.

I think I will treat myself to a Chart pronto – thanks for this
