AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

  • Peach–potato aphids (Myzus persicae) have been caught across England this week in the suction traps (ST) and now across all of Britain this year in yellow water traps (YWT), except North Scotland and Angus & Perthshire.
  • The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught at 10 ST sites this bulletin week, increasing in number at seven. They have also now been found in low numbers from all regions this year in the YWT apart from North Scotland, Angus & Perthshire, Borders and East Anglia.
  • The mealy cabbage aphid was caught in ST sites across central and southern England, with a hotspot at Writtle (87) and a first arrival from Broom’s Barn (28/5).
  • Single currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were caught at Dundee and Silwood in the ST this week.
  • The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at all sites but Newcastle this week, with numbers increasing at seven sites. The highest number caught was from Writtle (371).
  • The pea aphid pea aphid was caught at nine sites this week and included first arrivals at York (30/5), Wellesbourne (29/5) and Rothamsted (30/5).
  • We have received field reports of pea aphid colonies from south Lincolnshire. Combining peas should be sprayed when around 20% of plants are infested and vining peas when 15% are infested.
  • The first arrival of black bean aphids has been recorded from Dundee (31/5), Edinburgh (1/6), Preston (30/5), Wellesbourne (1/6), Writtle (28/5), Silwood (30/5) this week in our traps. We have now also received field reports from crops in south Lincolnshire and north Kent. The threshold for black bean aphid in field and broad beans is 10% colonisation.
