Worcester Sauce (tangy) Twiglets

Follow-up to Marmite from Planned Random Action

After an unusually high number of responses to my marmite thread talking about worcester sauce (tangy) twiglets I’ve decided to try and follow up what has happened to them.

For anyone that doesn’t know, Jacob’s Twiglets are baked wheat snack flavoured with yeast extract (marmite). A few years ago (possibly anywhere up to 10 years) Jacob’s released 2 new flavours of twiglets: Worcester Sauce (which later became Tangy Worcester Sauce) and one that I seem to remember being more garlic and herb flavoured. The latter flavour seemed to disappear fairly quickly as it was probably the case that nobody liked them.

The Worcester Sauce Twiglets were generally well accepted by people and stayed around for a bit longer.

Unfortunately these have also disappeared from shop shelves. Searching the internet has also yielded very few references about them (strangely this blog generally coming out top on google searches).

The only clue to their continued existance is from a tin of Twiglets from Christmas 2006. On the side there is a small panel listing some other products. Included is the Tangy Worcester Sauce Twiglets.

Do you know what happened to Worcester Sauce Twiglets? Have you found any for sale? Can we bring them back?

Regards
Me

Thank christ for you! I’ve been wondering about this for years now – they’re the best thing EVER! I reckon they totally disappeared about twelve months ago. I miss them too.

If I recall correctly they were dropped because they were not popular enough. I remember Tesco selling their stock off extremely cheap (something daft like 20p for a multipack) and buying shedloads of them. They were quite possibly the greatest Twiglets ever.

  3. Phil

20p for a multipack!? Heaven. I don’t even remember seeing multipacks… Just the big bags for about 99p… Even eating them one at a time, licking the flavour off first of course – I went through hundreds.

They other flavour you are thinking of were Curry.. I loved these & thw worcester ones so much i used to buy the 200g tins!
    they were the best!

I bought 4 packets of Worcester sauce twiglets in Sainsbury’s Newry Co.Down Northern Ireland just before christmas last year, they were 10p each as they had just gone out of date. They were beside some similar pretzels. I will take a look next time I am there.

The Worcester sauce twiglets were good…...but the curry ones were fanstastic! Sadly, these too have vanished without trace. I have a theory that food companies deliberately withdraw popular lines to encourage people to try even newer products…...the swines!

Nasty, unpleasant Curry and Tangy Twiglets, good riddance, you vile disfigured snack monstrosities. Burn in knobbly hell.

    Good show old bean.

Worcester Sauce Twiglets are/were fantastic and if you do manage to yield some detective results, can you share them with me please.

I used to munch down shedloads of these myself, owing to their lushness.

    Good hunting !

They probably went the same way as worcester sauce crisps (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article516702.ece) that had to be withdrawn for containing evil stuff.
I have to make do with Worcester Sauce Wheat Crunchies but even those are really impossible to find.

I, too, miss those tangy bastards. I look high and low having moved from Reading to Southampton to COventry and still haven’t seen them on sale, that’s in the last 5 years. I was ging to try to make my own, but didn’t :(

  14. scott

    Hey kids
Ill tell you where you can track them down. Morrisons (the yellow and black supermarket) sells them up ere in Falkirk, Scotland. Try emailing them for your nearest store stockist.

I’m afraid these ring-twitchingly tangy mothers met their demise thanks to the vanilla ice-cream flavour monster munch, truly the worst crisp ever to be released into the wild and thought, by some, to be one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse in the form of a puke tasting maize monster foot.

  16. Bert

They’re so soft ‘n’ yummi. Geordie horses eating nutrigrain bars. orginal.

    20 Feb 2007, 13:30

  17. Ferret

Wow. The undefined side effect of these crisps is vege-te-narians can eat them I do belive, what with the the fishy nature of the real sauce being the first disappointment of the newly sprouted bean eater :P

These comments are frankly fantastic. More woo to you.

scott is right about morrisons, however here in wales they’ve been absent for a few weeks now, arsecakes! still now marmite is doing a limited guiness based spread perhaps it’s time the twiglets went the way of the black stuff yum yum

I too enjoyed these while they were around, I greatly preferred them to the regular Marmite variety. For now Jacobs have lost a regular customer.

Haven’t seen them for ages, though the regular packs still say “Original Flavour” or something like that, so they may bering them back occasionally and I keep missing them.

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you for contacting us concerning your inability to find Jacob’s Tangy Twiglets. We regret to advise you that these are now discontinued and are unlikely to be manufactured again.

Before any product reaches the shelves, extensive and costly product development and research is undertaken. Only a small percentage of new product concepts reach the retail outlet, and even then, products may easily fail to gain the necessary appeal. Sadly, therefore, some products are removed from sale after only a seemingly short time.

However, a longer manufactured product may also be discontinued due to a falling off of popularity, resulting in it no longer being a viable product to produce.

We are genuinely sorry that we cannot give a more favourable response in this instance.

    Kind regards,
    Sue Gibson,
    Consumer Services Co-or

Everyone who loves Tangy Twiglets email the person in the email above at jacobsconsumerservices@unitedbiscuits.com and demand that they get production up and going again!

I am truly dissapointed to hear that Tangy/Curry are discontinued, I thought the shops stopped ordering them or were out of stock. It’s shame they are because they had bags of mourish flavouring and were healthier than the crisps.
    We want em back NOW!!!

  25. Ashley

Really Gutted! can you believe Jacobs have done this – Sainsburys used to have them in stock and now nothing! please contact me if you know anywhere who sells them – a size 8 craving these delightful treats (my mouths watering just thinking about them)...

I’m sorry to say it’s the same story for Worcester Sauce flavour Twiglets. Here’s the official line

Twiglets are a much loved wholewheat snack and they’ve been a consumer favourite for over 70 years.

In 2005 a limited edition Worcester Sauce variety was produced as a way of providing consumers with an alternative taste to the usual Twiglets. This wa sonly a limited edition and there are no plans to reintroduce it in the near future.

However, we do constantly review the product range that we have to try and show we meet the demands of our customers and we are looking at other product lines at the moment

Truely this is a great shame for all mankind. I feel i have wasted my time searching all supermarkets for these wonderful products, and some how worcester sauce poured in a bag of twiglets just doesn’t cut it. Jacobs you should be ashamed of yourselves, I hope I never meet any of you in a dark tunnel. I will never eat another twiglet again, but i will eat cheeselets.

  32. Krissi… Thank you for the link. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it is going to work.

I placed an order at 9am this morning (order then confirmed by email). At 10am another email arrived saying that the order can’t be downloaded and they would like me to use their newer site to place the order. This new site doesn’t have the Worcester sauce flavour ones listed.

I am going to contact them to see if they can get hold of them still.

Never mind the twiglets – what the hell have jacobs done to cheeselets!!!! Every year about this time theyre on the shelves ready for Christmas in the tubs and I loved em!

Now they’ve changed the recipe and they awful – pale, soggy and the flavour is way different, and you dont even get that lovely powder sticking to your fingers to suck off after!!

    I’m gutted. Christmas is cancelled.

I love this thread, my feelings are the very same, I loved the Tangy Twiglets and happy consumed many when they were about, I have sadly not seen them for ages, thought they were a xmas thing, but again not seen them.

I think we should do a petition for them to be brought back, if we get enough they will have to listen to us!!! I went to the states last year and had Diet Cherry coke and loved it, I emailed Coca Cola when I got back and asked why we didn’t have it, they said different countries have people deciding what they will sell or not sell, 2 months later what happens??......Diet Cherry coke appears!!!!, but now sadly that is starting to disapear – I can no longer by 2litre bottles in my local Asda!! What is the world coming too???

Also my newest addition is Wild Berry Skittles, again a rare buy, its been 2 months and not 1 sighting!!!

    BRING BACK TANGY TWIGLETS!!!!!!

    28 Sep 2007, 11:50

  38. pinpong

I am entirely upset the asda near my house stocked them and i was over joyed to find them then they stopped them and I had to get my brother to buy them in bulk from sainsburys 80p a bag then one day mysteriously no I haven’t thought of them for a long time now after searching shops for them and shouting at my brother for being an idiot and just find them now i type it into google in real hope and I have been smashed SMASHED. gutted to the core.

Why would they discontinue these! Its good to finally know what has happened. I have been driving my boyfriend nuts looking for them in the supermarket every time. He didn’t believe me that they existed. Oooooo its so sad tho. Why do they discontinue everything that was ever yummy :(

The comment below is on the united biscuit website today…...

“As well as the Original flavour, twiglets are also available in Tangy Worcester Sauce”

    .......they HAVE to be somewhere…..

I’ve also emailed customer services, need to hunt these babies down!

Just found this site after searching on the Internet as to why I can no longer find Tangy twiglets. Gutted to find that United Biscuits say they have discontinued them. Have emailed their customer services dept urging them to bring them back! Too late for this Christmas I guess, but maybe for next year?

Has anyone seen packets or tubs on sale recently?

    18 Nov 2007, 19:31

  47. Mini update…

Seems that this year’s tubs haven’t changed design and still display an advert for the Worcester Sauce Twiglets.

Going to email them about this as it is very frustrating them advertising a discontinued product 2 years in a row.

My gosh! I love you people!
I came online to search for tangy/curry twiglets and found this site, YOU SHARE MY LOVE FOR THEM.
What the frikk did happen? I NEED TO BUY SOME.
Perhaps a hunger strike of thousands infront of a major Twiglets factory would get them listening?

I have been a good girl this year and have said to Santa I want nothing more than a lifetime supply of those tangy little babies. My mouth waters just reminiscing of the Friday nights I slobbed out munching my way through a family size tub.

T’was the best time of my life.

On the plue side lucky they did go out of production otherwsie I would be a PLUS size for sure.

BRING BACK THE TANG! I am more rounded now I would honestly not eat my body weight in Tangy Twiglets every Friday night!!

NB Friday night was pig out night so could consume more of the Tangy Heaven…every other night I limited myself to a 99p bag. (Always bought 3 for 2 mind you!)

  50. amanda kelly- fellow looker of these twiglets

Twiglets are a much loved wholewheat snack and they’ve been a consumer favourite for over 70 years.

In 2005 a limited edition Worcester Sauce variety was produced as a way of providing consumers with an alternative taste to the usual Twiglets. This was only a limited edition and there are no plans to reintroduce it in the near future.

However, we do constantly review the product range that we have to try and show we meet the demands of our customers and we are looking at other product lines at the moment.

That’s as far it goes yeah?

I know you were saying [in previous calls] what do we do in terms of listening to people. We have a dedicated consumer care line and we print that number on the back of the packets of our products so that if anyone wants to get in touch with us to let us know what they think about what we make then they can get in touch with us that way. We always listen to their feedback.

It’s actually quite a short lifespan for the Worcester sauce flavoured Twiglets and no plans to bring them back…

No plans, no. But if you look at other parts of our product range for example McCoy’s Crisps and we do from time to time do seasonal changes in flavour as well as our traditional product range we introduce new flavours at diffeent time sof the year and try and gauge people’s reaction to it. So, we’re always looking at ways of introducing new flavours, but of course consumers tastes change all the time. So, as well as continuing with our core products we will look at different flavour varieties from time to time.

Have you got any details about the sales numbers?

I haven’t, but it’s very unlikely we would have released that anyway.

But, it was always seen as a short term thing then.

    It was. Absolutely.

So, there you have it. No more Worcester Sauce flavoured Twiglets. May I also add it took no less than eight phone calls to get just this much information… But don’t let that put you off. Go ahead and sign the petition. Shit happens.

UPDATE: First reactions are not good,

“Truely this is a great shame for all mankind. I feel i have wasted my time searching all supermarkets for these wonderful products, and some how worcester sauce poured in a bag of twiglets just doesn’t cut it. Jacobs you should be ashamed of yourselves, I hope I never meet any of you in a dark tunnel. I will never eat another twiglet again” Gus.
