Time is Flying – by Faisal

Hey,

How many times we have heard that "Time is Flying"? Sometimes we say it, sometimes our friends or sometimes we hear our teacher/mentors saying this. I was always told that time is of essence and was made to remember this quote "Time and Tide waits for no one". Hope I quoted correctly from my memory lol. As a teenager I always used to argue it and never wanted to believe it. I always thought that I can hold time. But with time I figured out that it was True and it is True.

It seems like just then when I was in teenager, or just then when I was a kid at school, etc. Look for yourself folks it was just few days ago we celebrated New Year and now we are already into half of first month of Januray. I feel like it was just then when I started PhD. I remember when I used to hear other fellow PhD's telling me that they are in second year or third year I used to feel happy that I am only in first year. I thought that I had plenty time but now I am already into second year. Time flies and it is flying for me, almost half of my PhD duration is gone.

Sometimes I think "Should I be going into panicking mode?", or not just now I still have time till I start pulling my hair because of stress and go Bald. Well now I have lost the joy of being a first year PhD, I feel like I should be more responsible from now on and work harder. But the dilemma is that I think more than I do :).

Life is going on quickly without our permission! But I think if you panic so much, you will lose your self-control.Just do more planning if you have not done and make a new time schedule from now on until completion of PhD…

‘Time flies’ is also one of my most often said phrases. Because it is so true!

Today is my final day of being a 1st year PhD student and I think I’m feeling the pressure too (a little). Should I be crying or celebrating? ;-)

Ceren, I make plans everyday in my head, I also follow them for few days but later I diverge from them. Salma, I congratulate you on surviving the 1st year of your PhD :). I guess you are the best person to self analyze if you achieved your set targets in your 1st year. How about doing both together, cry with happiness while celebrating the end of year 1? lol

Time seems to go quicker the older you get as well. I never worried about birthdays and thought that age was just a number but with my 30th birthday fast approaching, I’m beginning to reflect a bit more. I think it’s important when you start to panic that you focus on what you have done, not what you haven’t.

Peter, I appreciate your thoughts, sounds like an experienced Campaigner ;). I think as long as you are young at heart, age does not matter and I think it certainly applies to you.

faisal, i have just started my PhD this January and i have attended a Time Management Workshop last week. The workshop really enlightened me and got me into thinking about starting to focus on what i need to be doing (hopefully i stick to it!). and by the end of the workshop, the leader gave each of us a card…my card says “Nothing is worith more than this day ~~ Goethe”...It’s like another version of “Time is flying” :D

right on by saying that time of the essence but then again, time; in whatever respect we have, is what we have today.

we should be making the most of it that we have today…
may that be in making decisions or enjoying life or getting serious with the work at hand.

Time does fly, it only seems like a flick of our eyes that we recall our childhood, junior school days and suddenly we are brought towards the facts…what life is today…
Making the most of time today doesn’t necessarily mean we have to “start getting serious” but more than that, understand the value of life and the value of present.
