A Quiet Drink in the Grad…

Recently I and a friend went to The Graduate, the self proclaimed ‘Only pub on campus’. Amongst other things it was to escape the rag sponsored maiming of any kind of music policy at the end of term event (“and cue’d up we have Chesney Hawkes; some Swedish deathmetal; Outkast and if you give us that £10er- the mp3 you made of the sounds of screaming”). Anyway I digress…

The Graduate… picture it: real ale on tap, hand pulled pints, quiz machine lights seductively flashing, luxuriant leather sofas or intimate little tables, easy on the eye colours. Its quite easy to imagine how the tradition of a ‘Quiet one in the grad’ can stretch on for hours, as the participants cares dissolve into the cheery atmosphere.

However our evening was intruded upon by ‘relaxing, mood music’ piped in at a level nearing that of stadium rock. Live bands in the grad is one thing, even competent DJ’s warming up the room before a pub quiz [incidentally Neil Faraday’s Superior Pub Quiz will be there from 8 on Monday night. I am an intellectual fishfingerl], but the bar staff’s choice of music at club levels did absolutely nothing to improve the pub experience. Indeed at several points during the evening I could not actually make out what my companion was saying over the enforced ambience.

Sadly this sort of musical infraction is becoming all too common and quiet taverns are now scarce in any kind of urbanised areas. However, I would be interested to know whether anyone else thinks there is too much of this peaceful drinking eradication on campus at night?

  1. Too bloody right. It's everywhere and has been for a number of years. Although The (Airport) Bar isn't really meant to be pub-like, a couple of years ago they started playing the music at ear splitting level. Ridiculously loud. I remember it being quite noisey then at one point in the night at about 9pm when things started getting going, up when the volume. Stupid stupid.

There really isn't anywhere quiet to go anymore. Don't say the Arts Centre, because it's hardly comfy…

  3. It's extremely difficult to have a nice quiet drink anywhere, on or off campus. There always seems to be some shite being piped through the speakers.

Not just in pubs/bars either: TVs and radios on public transport make it that bit harder to get some silence.

It really annoys me tbh. I'm glad I drive, else it'd be very difficult to get some silence during the day when I can actually think!

Pretty good for people who don't want to think, though…

  4. Gavin: How could you go to the arts centre for anything like a cosy drink – its too much like a giant warehouse-artgallery hybrid. Leave ideas of intimacey at the door.

Mr Faraday: I have made the required amendment and admitted my codfish like intelligence level. "as proved by the fact i originally wrote "inteligence" there"

Edward: Good Points. Very good points. Yet anpther reason why i love driving. But who wouldn't want to think in The Grad or to be heard when talking to their mates…

  5. I want them to start serving tea and coffee etc in the Grad! I mean don't get me wrong I love a nice quiet pint of real ale as much as the next girl, but sometimes I want a hot drink, particularly with the cold as it is at the moment, and not only a cold drink but a caffeinated one!

Why must I be forced to ingest my depressents or stimulants in cold liquid form (those being alcohol or coke respectively), why not a nice warm cup of tea? Then again there is Xanana's…which I adore it must be admitted…but they're not open as late as the Grad sigh

On a further note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!!! Sorry I wasn't in the Grad with you tonight to celebrate, but then that would be a consequence of not telling me you would be there! We shall have to do something to celebrate at some point in the next week or so :) Although its so hard to do anything birthday related this month without treding on someone else's birthday toes…so many birthdays in this month of March!!
