More problems for LHC
Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7893689.stm
All of the £5bn spent on the LHC may go down the drain as the FermiLab reports its intention to discover God’s particle first, following delay to fire-up LHC in mid-summer this year.Everything was put on halt two weeks after initial warm up runs due to this:

Although, to me it all looks suspicious! A forgotten spanner between electrical connections? Helium leaks? Maybe, just maybe certain moles are responsible for it??!! Let’s wait and see if FermiLab accelerator will
experience “some” problems of its own.

The end of days has been postponed again
LHC should resume its work in November this year. this day has been moved once again since the faulty electric soldering had caused £14m worth of repairs.
it’s been said that all of the super-conducting magnets will be removed, some for cleaning and other for repairs.
here is an educated guess – there should be another commotion in the newspapers regarding the end of days . Last time newspapers got it wrong because the thing (LHC) had broken down :)

winter…balls…
Follow-up to LHC problems from The PhySoc Blog
these long couple of weeks for scientists at LHC. unfortunately they have to stop rescue work as the winter period is getting closer. this closure is due to the increased electricity demand during winter.
it would be a good thing to repair faulty electrical connection in 3-4 sector just before first snow touches the ground in Geneva. even most pessimistic of us (that’s me) could not have guessed that it might be out of service for longer than two months.

all of it, of course, means that the first results may not be available up until the end of 2009. another anxious year for Prof Higgs.

well…
Follow-up to LHC problems from The PhySoc Blog
it does not come as a surprise (i hope) the fact that LHC will be out of use for months to come.
you know, when your computer goes down, one might think:” this is going to cost me.” so, if you have such a problem in the future, just remember that it is nothing compared to the damage costs involved in bringing LHC back to life :)

here is the link to BBC article that will update you on latest developments.

LHC problems
Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7626256.stm
aanother problem strikes LHC. this time supercooled magnets failed. some liquid helium leaked into the tunnel. it might take a while for liquidating the fault. engineers will take the whole of weekend to evaluate all the damage.
i am not sure how many faults will it undergo but we might not see the first trial collisions for weeks, rather than days

CERN got hacked
Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7616622.stm
apparently, one of the computers was attacked by Greek hacking community (as it seems). the machine was not connected to the LHC, but even if it was, what’s the worst thing that would have happened?
Attack. hmmm, it looks more like vandalism or web-graffiti – nothing serious. there is no data damage in these cases. and exactly why have people been associating fully operational LHC with an end of the world????? arghhhhh, it is so annoying.
i don’t think any of the data computers for CERN should be connected to the Web.
was looking for the odd things on the net and found that some time in december of 2012 the world should cease its existance. the group called December21 2012 Believers think that The End comes soon. the oddest thing about this group is the fact that they have merchandise that relates to the date. WHY??? as it will be pointless at the time of End. i could not quite get how it will come to an end, but the picture of a comet had promised something scientific, but i could not find anything related to astrophysics.

CERN goes cold turkey
Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7512586.stm
this massive research lab will be at 1.9K during the experiments that would lead scientists to a greater understanding of the Big Bang.
it is the coldest working conditions for a lab of this size. apparently, to get it cooled down takes a couple of weeks. so the researches can’t make mistakes and if they do, readjustments will take a few months (think of the cost). that’s why their slogan is “no short cuts?”. i must admit, this is the lousiest motto from CERN scientists.
