lateen

lateen (2.XXXII.iii).

A triangular sail. The etymology is disputed: it may derive from French (voile) Latine, meaning 'Latin sail', referring to its common use in the Mediterranean (Bib:COD), or from the Italian a la trina, suggesting three angles, and thus a triangle (Bib:32).
