A List of Different Types of Knowledge

There are three Main types of Knoweledge Managment: -

  1. "Acquired Knowledge". This can be thought of as knowledge accrued from previous experiences, training, learning, even conversations with others.
  2. "Unique Knowledge". This is knowledge that comes about from spotting connections between pieces of information or seeing something that fits into a previous line of acquired knowledge that makes the knowledge worker view the knowledge in a new way.
  3. "Creative Knowledge". This is where someone takes their acquired knowledge and unique knowledge bases and uses them, not to think outside the box, but to think inspirationally.
Below are the list of different types of knowldge I can come across!!
  1. DIRECT KNOWLEDGE - This is firsthand experience with knowledge recieved.
  2. INDIRECT KNOWLEDGE - This is knowledge aquired by processing information.
  3. INTUITIVE KNOWLEDGE - This is knowledge stored in the memory of all individuals.
  4. PROCEDURAL KNOWLEDGE - This is instructiuonal based process to how to something.
  5. QUESTIONS - This is knowledge in search of knowldge.
  6. DECISIONS - This is made up of a combination of the procedural knowledge and questions.
  7. INFORMATION - This is the communication of other knowledge.
  8. FIXED - This is knowledge that comes from information in books
  9. DYNAMIC - This is knowledge that is moving and changes with time like the position of the sun.
  10. TRUE or FALSE - This is a concept of true and false knowledge can act as a preamble to other types of knowledge.
  11. CONTRADICTION - this is knowledge used to change the state of some other knowledge from True to False or from False to True.
  12. PREDICTION - This is knowledge of the future developed from processing current knowledge.
  13. NONSENSE - This is knowledge that results from informationpurposely or inadvertently scrambled so that it confuses the brain.
  14. NO KNOWLEDGE or THE END - This is the empty-set of knowledge where no knowledge exists.

Explicit Knowledge

Explicit knowledge can be recorded as words, numbers, mathematical and scientific formulae and codes. Explicit knowledge can also be articulated and strored in various media's, and can be easily transfered from individual to individuals. A good example that i have come across for explicit knowledge is Wikipedia as it a world wide spread knowldge transfer of informations.

There are three major approaches to the capture of tacit knowledge from individuals:


  • Interviewing experts - this can be done through a form of structured interviewing, this is used to capture the techniques used.
  • Learning by being told - this can be done by interviewing or analysising tasks. this is done to determine the actual task or policy by analysising it step by step.
  • Learning by observation - This can be done by having a problem, scenario or case study to go though and analysing the process used to resolve the problem.

After my research i have found 7 steps to help implement knowledge management and though i would share my findings.


  1. Identifing the business problem - this requires an identification of the business problems that are to be solved.
  2. Preparing for change - This involves the cultural changes in the way people precieve the knowledge that is developed.
  3. Creating teams - Having strong team leaders that have cross departmental expertise.
  4. Having knowledge audits - this helps organise the gained knowledge by creating catergories that reflet on the operations carried out by the individuals and the organisation.
  5. Key features - enhancing the IT infrastructure and the maybe the security can help solve the key problems faced by the company.
  6. Creating building blocks for knowledge managment - each phase that is being implemented addresses a specific part of the solutions, like laying the foundation for the next phase to provide benefits and provides a measurable ROI
  7. Linking knowledge to people

Today we had a workshop during which the importance of safety and security was discussed. Various industrial examples where shown. the maximumum reason of accidents or mishaps happening is because of people not taking in or gathering enough information of or about the task in hand.

But many times even when the information is there people tend to overlook the safety and security aspect. In trying to get things done fast many safety asspects are ignored, which coud lead to fatal accidents. Most of the times these people will say that the were trying to benifit the company by doing the the work fast. But then by passing safety procedures can never be in the benifit of anyone. I would always discourage people to save a little time or a little resources by passing safety procedures and putting themselves and others in danger.

Robust Decisions

While doing the Robust Decision Making module I have learnt different techniques to understand the use of theories in implementing excellent ways to make a sustainable decision. I have learnt different skills and the use of various tools on how to make decisions that are robust. Decision-making is a skill that managers have reported as being essential, as training sessions should be experimented with new tools and techniques that are effective in bringing about behavioural change. The significance of learning about these different techniques has furthered my knowledge to help provide potential ways to make sustainable long lasting robust decisions. There are many tools out there and during the module we have focused on 3 main tools. Which were the decision tree, a grid analysis, and scenario planning. One of the tools was scenario planning this tool was used to forecast flexible plans in the future and see what the financial year will be like and how many products will be sold this year and next year, this is done by using previous years information.

Learning from experience

Why is it that some people do not want to learn from other peoples experiences? Learning from other peoples experience actually makes you want to know how they overcame the problem(s). Alot of people want to make their own mistakes and learn from them themselves. But those who share their mistakes from their experiences help people overcome similar issues... Learning from other people's experience actually makes you realize what the world is really like once you start working in the real world.


I came across two qoute:


  1. "Experience is the child of thought, and thought is the child of action" (Benjamin Disraeli)
  2. "Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself." (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Leadership Is Not All About Winning!!

From a week of the Leadership module I have learnt that Leadership is not all about winning but it is about learning to be an effective leader in your team or environment. Even though I have been in the winning team three times now, I have learnt that you have to make the atmosphere in your team to be a learning from mistakes one. Making the atmosphere more friendly and fun, will help make the followers more motivated to follow. There are some key qualities to be an effective leader that I have learnt from this week:


  • Having a Vision, creating goals to achieve what you want.
  • Having the ability to communicate and listen to others in yout group/team other then yourself.
  • Creating that fairness and openess atmosphere.
  • Have confidence not only in your group/followers but in yourself.
  • Taking responsibility and exploreing other members of your team.
  • Be able to encourage, motivate and inspire other members in your group.

Team exercise leadership refelection

I learnt that there are a lot of different types of leaders, after the Hotel exercise. I have learnt that there are autocratic leaders, democratic leader, silent leaders, authority/dominance leader and those who want to be led. The group we had all these various types of leaders. I have realized that it is the surrounding some leaders are in, that they do not show their true colors, and do not come out of their cage, unless they feel the environment they are in is a friendly one or not. In business it has been said that there is no such thing as an in-direct leader but I believe there is such thing as a silent leader. A silent leader is a person that lets the team feel his or her presence by reassuring the team’s performance. Because the team was doing really well in the exercise and if the team was felt as the leader was autocratic it would have put the teams atmosphere in jeopardy. As the team knew the situation that was being faced and the leaders that came in were debriefed of the current situation. We learnt that our team was not a leader led team but joint individual leaders there were 3 main leaders 1 silent leader and 1 assessor. We all created a fun, friendly and secure environment where we could all open up and show our fairness in the team. The best part was when there was an argument; there was always a bargainer that would meet the two that were arguing halfway.
