i have eight msn contacts and they are never, ever online. i think they are trying to tell me something but i can't work it out so i resort to solipsism. since my contacts never log in i cannot prove that they actually exist

No, I've stayed up pretty late and there's usually someone online… it's just this golden period at around 7 – 8AM I think, when even the most ardent night owls have died. It also helps that we're moving into the summer period where many student types move home and away from broadband.
Not that I've analysed this or anything.
