Winnerd

Follow-up to Winner! from my housemate is a soviet spy

Courtesy of London Camera Exchange and Spa Scene magazine, I found myself with £200 of vouchers for LCE. Wanting a new lens that covered slightly longer distances than my current Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC I ended up parting with an extra £230 to buy myself a lovely new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

I’ll post some test shots in the next week, and expect some more photos anyway as I’ve been pretty slack recently. Basically I’m pretty happy with my new beast!

Changing Piazza

Camera: Canon EOS 350D
Lens: Sigma 18–200mm f3.5–6.3 DC
Filter: UV + circular polariser
Date: 20th September 2006
Location: Lucca, Italy
Focal Length: 18mm (equivalent focal length: 30mm)
Shutter: 1/15s
Aperture: F/22
ISO: 200
Comments: I took this in colour (and yes without a fisheye lens – the piazza naturally curved round me like that) and decided to create an old italy -> new italy picture, so used focal black and white in Picasa to create this. Im not sure if I’ve created exactly what I want, but I like it anyway. I havn’t cropped the vignetting in the corners (the bits of the polarising filter you can see) because I think it actually adds to the image.
Post–processing: focal black and white.

Boats

Camera: Canon EOS 350D
Lens: Sigma 18–200mm f3.5–6.3 DC
Filter: UV + Circular Polarser
Date: 10th September 2006
Location: Leamington Spa
Focal Length: 40mm (equivalent focal length: 65mm)
Shutter: 1/80s
Aperture: F/5
ISO: 200
Comments: I’ve got a self loathing of my own photography at the moment, so I took one I wasn’t particularly happy with, cropped it, mono’d it with red filter and then added “film grain” to give it that nice old look. Im still not happy with it, but thought I’d share it with you guys anyway.
Post–processing: crop, mono-red, film grain.

Heart of Darkness

Camera: Canon EOS 350D
Lens: Sigma 18–200mm f3.5–6.3 DC
Filter: UV +Circular Polariser
Date: 10th September 2006
Location: Jepherson Gardens, Leamington Spa
Focal Length: 48mm (equivalent focal length: 78mm)
Shutter: 1/13s
Aperture: F/8
ISO: 400
Comments: More black and white. I had planned this shot since walking through it one evening in the dark. It was different in the day, and also quite busy. Admittedly I forgot to take off my polariser, but I don’t think it’s done much to it. I mono’d it post-photo and added a green filter to bring out the foliage. It’s not the best, as I found it difficult to get the exposure right; with the end light all perfect yet the shadows just right. I think it was because I took it during mid-day. I’ll try it one evening with a tripod and see what happens (aka. get mugged). Another attempt can be seen here
Post–processing: b/w with green filter, cropped.
