Still here!

Hi Everyone!

I have to admit to being a very bad person and not blogging on here for a very very long time. Sort of, well forgot. Everyone seems to prefer Facebook and twitter, but I suddenly remembered how nice it was to read a full length entry, rather than a comment restricted to about 50 characters long…

So the Music Centre has been up to a lot in the year and a half that we’ve not blogged. The main highlights have to be the tours – everyone’s been at it, from Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to Belgium March 2009, Wind orch and Brass to Prague July 2009, Big Band to Vienna July 2009, Chamber Orchestra to INDIA!! November 2009, Wind Orch mini tour, Chamber Choir tour to Devon & Cornwall and right back to the Easter Holidays 2010 with Symphony Orch and Chorus going to the Netherlands. Phew!!

Oops

Well, it’s been a while. Sorry about that folks!

Since new year the Music Centre has done so much stuff it’s been all too much for yours truly to actually remember to blog about (I know, I have failed you all… but be patient, I’ve been concentrating my time on good things that will benefit you all, so it’s not all bad!)

So, Spring Term… highlights:

  • One World Week – lots of group performances from the Music Centre groups
  • Wind Orchestra performed with 200 or so school children in “Yanomamo”
  • Brass Band welcomed back legendary Tuba player Steve Sykes to perform with them in their concert
  • Symphony Orchestra and Chorus put on a stunning performance of Verdi’s Macbeth Opera (as concert performance) and welcomed international soloists to perform the lead roles, as well as impressive performances from our own students!
  • MTW put on Little Shop of Horrors in the Cooler which was recieved with great enthusiasm

...and loads more besides!

Summer Term highlights:
  • WSAF (Warwick Student Arts Festival) – lots of great performances there
  • NOT Strictly Come Dancing! – a fantastic disco of live music, followed with a ceiligh and finishing with a giant conga stretching around the entire inside of the Arts Centre!
  • Carmina Burana performed by the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus featuring Telford Junior school as the children’s choir, plus Shostakovic’s symphony No 10
  • Into the Woods performed to sell out audiences from MTW – they also managed to put on “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”
  • Big Band leavers gig – described as the best gig ever heard, the Big Band’s annual leavers gig went down a storm!
  • Chamber Choir charity concert for Joe Homan charity – raised over £600!

...and that was while we were trying to revise…!

Big Band, Chamber Choir & Brass Band have all toured this summer and Big Band are once again attending the Alma Jazz festival in September. The Brass Band are off to Harrogate for the National Finals as well so there’s been plenty of action over the last few months!!

Looking forward to the new term – Free Concert 7th October in the Student Union Tent (more details to follow), Dido and Aeneas by Warwick Student Opera, Chamber Choir and Chorus in Coventry Cathedral and much much more!!

Happy New Year!

Hello and a very Happy New Year from the Music Centre!

As the start of term quickly approaches we have a lot of music making to look forward to!

Here are just a few of the highlights:

SHAKESPEARE TERM! Shakespeare

This term the theme running through the Music Centre focuses on Shakespeare (well, we do border his county after all!) and the music widely associated with his plays. From full length feature performances to modern adaptions, the music of Shakespeare is probably more familiar to you than you think!

Brass Band welcome Tuba legend Steve Sykes to perform their Butterworth Concert with them as they play  selections from Othello by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and "A time for us" - the love theme from Romeo and Juliet.

Weds 13th Feb, Butterworth Hall, Warwick Arts Centre, Tickets £5(£3)

Wind Orchestra join forces with local Primary school children to perform a new arrangement of Jonathan Dove's Seaside Postcards, as well as some modern twists on Shakespeare with four dances from West Side Story and the Oscar-Winning film Shakespeare in Love (1999)

Monday 25th February, Butterworth Hall, Warwick Arts Centre, Tickets £5(£3)

Symphony Orchestra and Chorus present Verdi's Macbeth - in full and in Italian, with outstanding Icelandic Baritone Olaf Sigurdason in the title role of Othello, heading up a cast of international performers

Tuesday 11th March, Butterworth Hall, Warwick Arts Centre, Tickets £6(£4)

As well as Shakespeare, we have other delights of the stage, with MTW presenting Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in the Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre from the 23rd - 26th January, Tickets £9 (£6.50)

Keep your eyes peeled for further information on all Music Centre events coming soon! Details of Arts Centre concerts can be found on the Music Centre website or the Arts Centre website and booking pages.
