Secrets of Magazine Cover Design

Secrets of Magazine Cover Design: You can Always Judge a Magazine by its Front Cover!!!!

Return to Lifestyle Magazines Hub

Introduction

Forget the old adage: you can most certainly judge a magazine by its front cover and magazine designers are very well aware of this!! Failure to create a good design for the front cover could mean the success or failure of the whole magazine! It is important to get it right.

What Designers are Trying to Achieve

The most important thing for a front cover designer is to make sure that the front cover is attractive to their target audience. It’s not nanotechnology to recognise that an image of a seventy year couple sitting in a peaceful garden is unlikely to reach the teen market audience of an indie rock mag. Clearly the whole of the cover design including the fonts and the main image must appeal to the target audience. Even with the most appropriate content inside the audience will already have been turned off.

Designers have to consider a wide range of concerns when they making sure that their design reaches their target audience. One of the most important things which needs to be thought about is how to make sure potential readers recognise the magazine. This means developing a brand identity. Another key issue is how to make sure the magazine is clearly recognised on the newsagents stands.

  • Masthead: The masthead functions to create a brand identity. This means that the masthead must have the same look in every single edition. customers and potential customers will comne to recognise the brand identity
  • To help achieve brand identity the masthead must be in a font which is clearly recognisable and appeals to its target audience.
